Applications are open for the IJP German-Central Eastern European Journalism Scholarship 2023. For the year 2023/24, the International Journalism Programmes (IJP) are offering a scholarship programme for journalists who want to devote six to eight weeks to reporting on climate and energy issues. The scholarship is funded by European Climate Initiative (EUKI).
Every year, a total of up to ten journalists from Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Slovakia are given the opportunity to participate in the scholarship programme. Journalists who receive the Climate and Energy Scholarship will gain a deeper and more detailed insight into the subject area and thus have the opportunity to work and specialize both thematically and internationally. Participants are invited to pursue a transnational research project on a jointly chosen topic during their fellowship period.
Programme Details
The scholarship will begin with a thematic introductory conference (expected in October 2023). Usually, the stay in the respective guest media follows directly, but the start may take place at another time in 2023/24. Journalists from Germany spend the fellowship period with a medium from the other countries mentioned above, while journalists from these countries come to Germany for a guest medium. The IJP selects the respective guest medium in consultation with the scholarship holders and with regard to interests and qualifications. The scholarship holders are involved in the workflow of the guest media, but also work on their own journalistic projects and report for the media in their home country. During the six- to eight-week stay, the journalists get to know their host country better, establish contacts with colleagues on the ground and deepen their knowledge of climate and energy issues.
At a three-day final conference (expected in December 2023), participants will be asked to submit a three-page experience report as well as their journalistic work produced during their stay. All scholarship holders are invited to stay in touch with former participants from Germany and over 40 other countries beyond the program through an alumni circle.
Scholarship
- The scholarship holders receive a one-time payment of 3,800 Euros. The amount is intended to cover part of the travel expenses, food and accommodation. All additional costs must be borne by the participants themselves.
Eligibility
- Open to journalists from Germany, Croatia, the Czech Republic, Hungary, Slovenia and Slovakia.
- They should be working as freelancers or editors in the field of print, radio, online or TV.
- Language skills in a language of the host country are not required. Workable English skills are expected in any case.
Application
The application must be accompanied by:
- a curriculum vitae in tabular form with a passport photo
- a journalistic report from the head of department or the editor-in-chief, which also supports
the application - four written work samples (television and radio journalists are asked to compile a comprehensive list of outstanding contributions)
- a preference specification of certain media as well as countries and cities (e.g. Munich, Prague or Zagreb). Applicants should indicate at least three media and country requests.
The selection will be made by a jury on the basis of the application documents.
