Deadline: October 16, 2023

The second D-Prize Global Competition of 2023 is now accepting applications! Are you an aspiring social entrepreneur, or do you know someone who is? They could use your help.

D-Prize is looking for entrepreneurs who can design a new nonprofit or social venture that distributes an existing poverty solution to thousands, maybe even millions of people. We have identified over a dozen products and services known to alleviate poverty. We now challenge entrepreneurs to design ways to distribute to people in need.

This year, they aim to award 30+ teams each with up to $20,000 in seed capital to launch a pilot and test their idea for a new venture.

Challenges

  • Health Access
    • Self-injectable Contraceptive Challenge
    • Oxygen Challenge
    • Patient Identification Challenge
    • Maternal Health Challenge
    • Voluntary Medical Male Circumcision Challenge

    • Solar lamp challenge
  • Public Services
    • Government transparency challenge
    • Road safety challenge
  • Custom
    • Propose Your Own Challenge: D-Prize is specifically interested in distributing proven poverty interventions to those in need. If you know of a highly-effective intervention that is backed by credible evidence, they want to hear what it is and see your plan to increase its distribution.

Prize

  • D-Prize will award the most promising teams with up to $20,000 USD to launch their new organization wherever extreme poverty exists.

Eligibility

  • D-Prize is for aspiring entrepreneurs from anywhere in the world, of any age, and any background. The majority of their awardees have not launched nor raised any funding.
  • They will consider funding existing organizations only if you are distributing an existing intervention and you have a need for high-risk capital that cannot be supported by your current donors or revenue.

Here are a few qualities they think make up the ideal candidate:

  • Desire to expand delivery of an existing, proven poverty intervention. They are open to many sectors and fields, including agriculture, energy, health access, clean water, livelihoods, and public services (see our challenges for more details)
  • New or just starting their work. They typically give startup grants to launch new organizations. They rarely support those older than 2 years old or that have raised more than $30,000
  • Desire to do this work full time.
  • At this time, they are only able to evaluate applications submitted in English. They do not grade on language, and grammar and vocabulary errors will not be penalized.

Application

Take a look at the current D-Prize challenges, and then download an application.

The early deadline to submit is 15 October, and the regular deadline is 5 November.
