Internews’ Earth Journalism Network (EJN) and the Science Journalists Association of India (SJAI) invite communicators from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to join a workshop on renewable energy in New Delhi from November 24-27, 2023. This workshop is open to communicators from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar only.
The topics covered will include research and development in energy conversion and storage, delivering fuels of the future within the Just Transitions framework, clean and efficient energy production including the development of fuel cells, technological challenges to scaling up, and the important link between energy and health.
The organizers will facilitate engagement between communicators, scientists, researchers, subject experts and policymakers, providing an opportunity to gain knowledge and deepen understanding of the promises and obstacles in the road ahead as India strives to increase the percentage of renewable energy in its total energy mix.
Background
India is the world’s third-largest energy consumer, and its energy demand is growing rapidly. The country’s current energy mix is dominated by fossil fuels, but there is a growing focus on renewable energy. India has committed to meeting 50% of its energy requirements with renewable energy, reducing its projected carbon emissions by one billion metric tons, and reducing the emissions intensity of its GDP by 45% by 2030.
To improve public awareness of these ambitious energy targets, and the progress made till date in India’s and specifically Uttar Pradesh and Bihar’s energy planning, EJN and SJAI are organizing a workshop for communicators. The workshop sessions are designed to strengthen the skills of communicators to research and report on renewable energy issues.

Eligibility
Applicants must:
- Be a communicator based in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar from print, online, radio and television outlets.
- Commit to attending all days of the workshop.
- Have some experience reporting on scientific and/or environmental topics.
- Understand and be able to communicate in English and/or Hindi.
- Demonstrate interest in renewable energy issues.
- Permit republication by the organizers of any output as a result of participation in the workshop.
Application
Applicants must submit two published samples or links to work that has appeared online. Work related to renewable energy issues are preferred.
