Data Governance in Africa Research Fund 2025: Call for African-based Researchers (up to $10,000)

Applications are open for the Data Governance in Africa Research Fund 2025. Join the Data Governance in Africa Research Fund to shape data governance and data policies in African countries. The Initiative seeks African-based researchers to study current data governance trends and identify policy recommendations.

Under the Data Governance in Africa Initiative, Mozilla Foundation and the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit GmbH (GIZ) African Union collaborate to increase awareness on and support the domestication of the African Union Data Policy Framework through the Data Governance in Africa Research Fund. Researchers will be supported with USD $10,000 to conduct an empirical study proposed according to their expertise. Researchers are also expected to be a part of a regional strategy to distribute and share the findings and recommendations of the research to different stakeholder groups, particularly policy influence makers in the focus countries or regions of their study.

Research Focus

Successful applicants will contribute to expanding knowledge on critical aspects of data governance in Africa, including:

  • Implementation of the AU Data Policy Framework.
  • Cross-border data sharing.
  • Data protection legislation.
  • Balancing data utilization and privacy concerns.
  • Addressing contextual and capacity challenges in African countries.

Eligibility

  • Open to African-based researchers with expertise in data governance, policy, or related fields;
  • Demonstrated understanding of African data governance challenges and opportunities;
  • Ability to conduct rigorous research and provide actionable policy recommendations.

The criteria for reviewing applications will consider the following:

  • Geographic location and work focus of applicants.
  • Applicant experience in the internet, AI and digital technology sector in Africa.
  • Applicant familiarity with national or regional contexts, clear articulation of the data justice issue.
  • Clearly defined methodology and impact, research plan, and budget.
