Deadline: July 31, 2025

Are you a journalist passionate about human rights, gender justice, and youth voices? Do you want to tell compelling and impactful stories about Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) that challenge stereotypes, stigma, and spark change? Apply for the JHR Journalists for SRHR Masterclass 2025.

Journalists for Human Rights (JHR) invites journalists, editors, producers, media networks, and Guilds from the East and Southern Africa regions to apply for the Journalists for SRHR Masterclass, a dynamic six-month journalism fellowship focused on impactful, ethical, and solutions-oriented reporting on sexual and reproductive health rights.

The Journalists for SRHR Masterclass is an initiative by the World Health Organization, in collaboration with UNAIDS, UNFPA, and UNICEF, as part of the 2gether 4 SRHR Programme, a joint regional effort implemented by the four agencies in partnership with the Regional SRHR Team of Sweden. This joint programme leverages the comparative strengths and technical expertise of the participating UN agencies to deliver as one. It aims to improve sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR) for all people in Eastern and Southern Africa through a regional approach grounded in applied learning at the country level.

Program Details

The journalism fellowship will offer a series of webinars that provide comprehensive training to enhance journalists’ understanding of and reporting on issues related to sexual and reproductive health. The training will pay special attention to the relevant context and nuances specific to the East and Southern Africa regions.

The fellowship will run for six months, during which journalists will undergo intensive training to gain practical experience in reporting on various SRHR issues. This hands-on experience aims to elevate critical sexual and reproductive health topics across the continent and foster transformative discussions on these rights. Those who successfully complete the program will qualify for a story production grant and mentorship.

Ultimately, the fellowship seeks to influence policy changes that prioritize sexual and reproductive health rights in East and Southern Africa.

Eligibility

You must:

  • Be a practising and accredited journalist in their country of jurisdiction;
  • Demonstrate prior knowledge, experience and interest in covering SRHR-related topics;
  • Be affiliated with a credible media outlet that may be required to support the fellows’ work;
  • Show proof of confirmation from a media outlet to publish (applicable to freelance journalists);
  • Reside and report in East and Southern African countries;
  • Be available to participate in the masterclass sessions fully;
  • Have at least three years of experience in journalism;
  • Be proficient in either English, French or Portuguese.

They encourage female journalists and key populations to apply.
