Deadline: October 26, 2025

Applications are open for the Policy Innovation Lab Postdoctoral Fellowship in Data Science and Policy Innovation 2026-2027. The Policy Innovation Lab at Stellenbosch University’s School for Data Science and Computational Thinking is offering a two-year postdoctoral position in data science and policy innovation.

The Lab focuses on responsible AI for policymaking, both using AI in policy processes and shaping policy to ensure AI is used responsibly. It combines qualitative and quantitative research with app development to improve policymaking in South Africa. The Lab works directly with policymakers to rethink how policy problems and solutions are defined, contributing to South Africa’s progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals.

The postdoctoral researcher will use responsible AI to improve policymaking, produce peer-reviewed research aligned with the Lab’s goals, support training programmes, and engage with experts across sectors. They must have strong data science and project management skills, ideally with a track record of using data and AI to tackle societal issues. The candidate will work closely with the project lead, Lab researchers, funders and partners to deliver the Lab’s mandate.

Benefits

  • Fellowship value: R420,000 per year. Note that postdoctoral fellowships are tax-free as fellows are not appointed as employees. Postdoctoral fellows are not eligible for employee benefits.

  • Applicants must have a proven interest in using technology for societal impact.
