New York Times A.I. Initiatives Fellowship 2026 (Paid)

Applications are open for the New York Times A.I. Initiatives Fellowship 2026. They are looking for a fellow who will bring a mix of machine-learning and journalism experience to newsroom reporting projects. You will work with journalists across departments to identify, develop and execute projects that use the power of artificial intelligence, applying machine learning and data science techniques to address investigative challenges. You will be part of the A.I. Initiatives team, which includes editors, engineers and a product designer.

This is an in-office position and includes regular attendance in the office four days each week. There may be some flexibility to work remotely per your departmental guidance. You may be required to work some nights, weekends and holidays as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with investigative reporters to support projects that benefit from A.I., including large-scale research, transcription, translation, document search, language analysis and computer vision tasks
  • Identify opportunities and experiment with responsible A.I. tools to empower the newsroom
  • Participate in training and social programs designed for the fellowship
  • Demonstrate support and understanding of our value of journalistic independence and a strong commitment to our mission to seek the truth and help people understand the world

Salary

  • The annual base pay range for this role is between: $82,414.80 – $82,414.80 USD

Eligibility

  • No more than five years of full-time, professional experience in journalism and/or machine learning
  • Technical proficiency and experience analyzing data, developing applications and conducting research with machine-learning models
  • Editorial experience, such as interning in a newsroom or working on a college newspaper
  • Engineering skills and experience with APIs, front-end web applications and databases
  • Recent experience working with LLMs and other machine-learning models
  • Interest in the intersection of journalism and artificial intelligence
  • Understanding of ethical considerations surrounding the use of A.I. in journalism.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Record of multiple news or opinion journalism internships, or equivalent experience
  • Work demonstrating experience applying A.I. to real-world problems
  • Experience working with large datasets and cloud computing platforms
  • Experience working with Svelte or similar front-end frameworks
