Deadline: Ongoing

Applications are open for the Blue Food Futures Research Grant Program 2026. The Blue Food Futures Program (BFFP) builds on the groundwork laid by the global Blue Food Assessment and the Aquatic Blue Food Coalition, driving forward key research and policy integration efforts. By focusing on the contributions and limitations of blue food systems, the Program informs decision-makers on blue foods’ roles in sustainable food systems and climate adaptation, helping shape national and international policy discussions.

BFFP is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural Research Grant Program. As part of the UN Ocean Decade endorsed program, the Research Grant Program seeks to empower emerging researchers and professionals dedicated to advancing the role of blue foods in global food systems transformation. This program aims to strengthen the link between science, policy, and action in blue food research, supporting innovative ideas that address pressing challenges in food, climate, nature, and social equity.

Grant

Grantees will receive:

  • Mentorship from leading global experts in blue food research and policy.
  • Opportunities to present research findings at international policy fora.
  • Integration into a global network of blue food researchers, policymakers, and practitioners.
  • $10,000 in research funding and travel support for fieldwork and policy engagement.

Eligibility

  • Open to early-career researchers, professionals, and practitioners from academia, government, NGOs, and the private sector.
  • Applicants must demonstrate an active interest in the following topic areas: Blue food pathways and interactions with climate and biodiversity goals; Sustainable, equitable, and resilient blue food transitions; Engagement and nutritional implications of small-scale fisheries participation in global trade.
  • Received a PhD in a related field within the last five years, or PhD candidates close to completion of their degree are eligible.
  • This fellowship will be conducted at the fellow’s existing research institution. The fellow must be available for virtual meetings with the research team as well as partners that are geographically distributed, which may include hours outside of a regular workday in a given location.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and fluency in English. Professional fluency in additional languages is desirable.
  • Superlative interpersonal skills.
  • Self-starter who can manage multiple projects simultaneously, work independently, and collaborate as a member of a team.
  • Preference for candidates with direct experience working in locations classified as developing nations.

Application

To apply, applicants should compile a curriculum vitae, a cover letter, and contact information for three references, with at least one reference from their current institution. The cover letter must address:

  • your past academic research and relevant work experience;
  • any previous involvement in broader impact activities relevant to the scope of the Blue Food Futures Program;
  • your statement of interest in the BFFP Research Grant Program and how you envision it furthering your career;
