Applications are open for the CDC Steven M. Teutsch Prevention Effectiveness (PE) Fellowship 2026. The CDC Steven M. Teutsch Prevention Effectiveness (PE) Fellowship is a two-year post-doctoral research fellowship. The program selects about 10 Traditional Track fellows and 10 Analytics and Modeling Track fellows each year. Most fellows are placed in assignments at CDC headquarters in Atlanta, Georgia. It is possible that some fellows will be assigned to other states or public health agencies.

The program leverages the input of the multi-disciplinary decision science community at CDC. It focuses on academic preparedness, letters of recommendation, research and work experience, publications or evidence of publication potential, methodological and data skills, and a personal statement.

Benefits

  • Fellows are paid at the General Schedule (GS) 12, step 3 level. They receive the same benefits as other CDC FTE employees, including medical insurance and leave.
  • Fellows may be eligible for a salary increase after the first year of their fellowship, based on performance and written recommendation by appropriate management officials.
  • Fellows are responsible for any relocation expenses for their two-year assignment.

Eligibility

Traditional Track

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) with all requirements completed prior to the start of the fellowship. Eligible degrees include:

  • Economics
  • Agricultural economics
  • Health services research
  • Public health
  • Other related quantitative field

Analytic and Modelling Track

Applicants must hold a PhD (or equivalent) with all requirements completed prior to the start of the fellowship. Eligible degrees include:

  • Epidemiology
  • Infectious disease modeling
  • Disease ecology
  • Applied mathematics
  • Operations research or industrial engineering
  • Biological science
  • Data science
  • Evolutionary or analytic biology
  • Other related quantitative field

Applicants must be in one of the following groups to be considered for the program.

  • US Citizens
  • US Permanent Residents
  • F1 visa holders
    • Prior to the program start date, F1 applicants must have an OPT with EAD that is valid for the entire first year of the program AND have STEM eligibility. Non-US citizen candidates who advance in the selection process will be contacted to discuss their work authorization.
