Deadline: February 1, 2026

Applications are open for the Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants 2026. Each year, the Wilson Ornithological Society offers four categories of research grant. The focus of each differs somewhat, as does the amount of the award. Willingness to report results of the research as an oral or poster paper at an annual meeting of the Wilson Ornithological Society within the next five years and provide a brief write-up and a photograph of the awardees for the webpage is also a condition of all grants.

The grant categories include:

  • Louis Agassiz Fuertes Grants
  • Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants
  • Paul A. Stewart Grants
  • George A. Hall / Harold F. Mayfield Grant

Grants

  • Louis Agassiz Fuertes Grants: Up to two awards of $5,000 are given annually.
  • Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants: Funding requests are considered for budgets up to $3,000. Requests for budgets below $3,000 are encouraged, if appropriate for proposed research.
  • Paul A. Stewart Grants: Up to four awards of $2,000 are given annually.
  • George A. Hall / Harold F. Mayfield Grant: Up to one $2,000 award is given.

Eligibility

  • Louis Agassiz Fuertes Grants: Open to all ornithologists, although graduate students and young professionals are preferred. Any avian research is eligible.
  • Wilson Ornithological Society Research Grants: Multiple research grants for any area of ornithology are awarded in this category. Two of these awards will be limited to research by Masters students and two of these awards will be limited to research by undergraduate students.
  • Paul A. Stewart Grants: Preference will be given to proposals for studies of bird movements (based on banding, radio or satellite telemetry, or similar methods) or an emphasis on economic ornithology.
  • George A. Hall / Harold F. Mayfield Grant: This award is limited to independent researchers without access to funds and facilities available at colleges, universities, or governmental agencies, and is restricted to non-professionals, including high school students. Any kind of avian research is eligible.
