Deadline: January 16, 2026

Applications are open for the Solutions Journalism Network Addressing Health Disparities Fellowship 2026. Over the course of a year, seven selected newsrooms will produce high-impact reporting that highlights and investigates responses aimed at reducing health disparities affecting Latino communities in the United States.

They are seeking organizations that are committed to their communities, eager to join a community of practice with like-minded peers and willing to think outside the box to tell stories. Each newsroom will receive funding, training and support from SJN and their partners.

Benefits

The participating newsrooms will receive:

  • A $14,000 grant, including a travel stipend to be used to attend a journalism conference in 2027
  • Professional development for editors and journalists on:
    • How to produce solutions journalism
    • How to cover healthcare topics through a solutions lens
    • How to cover and engage with your community differently
  • Support and coaching on how to apply the principles of solutions journalism to everyday stories through monthly cohort meetings and monthly coaching calls.
  • An opportunity to work within a cohort of other Latino-serving newsrooms

Eligibility

  • Open to newsrooms of any size, publishing in any format, committed to incorporating rigorous reporting on solutions that recognize the social conditions, systems and factors that influence health including education, economics, race and environment.
  • A track record of original reporting on Latino issues and communities, and an interest in expanding their current coverage.
  • Capacity to produce enterprise stories that address disparities in health outcomes;
  • Commitment to monthly cohort meetings and monthly coaching calls.
  • Interest in experimenting with new ways to engage with their audiences to share their stories and findings.
  • Newsrooms willing to reflect and measure their newsroom progress and impact at several points through the initiative.
  • Willingness to engage in an “all teach, all learn” environment. While SJN will provide experienced trainers and leaders into the monthly meetings, we know that valuable insights and experience come from peers as well. They are looking for newsrooms that are excited to share what’s working (and what’s not) with others in the cohort and in a larger network.
  • Newsrooms committed to making the changes needed to incorporate solutions journalism into their regular workflow, and generally committed to producing one story a month.

The minimum requirement is a willingness to learn about and practice solutions journalism — no previous practice is expected. Newsroom leaders and editors must be willing to support and guide the production of solutions journalism and engage in ongoing learning throughout the grant period.
