Applications are open for the Scuola Superiore Sant’Anna PhD in Human Rights, Global Politics and International Studies 2026-2027. Embark on a groundbreaking interdisciplinary journey at the Ph.D. programme in Human Rights, Global Politics, and International Studies. At the heart of the programme is a commitment to fostering curiosity and open-minded exploration. They seek ideal candidates who are ready to embrace the rich diversity of disciplines and approaches they offer.

This programme empowers you to:

Benefits

  • An interdisciplinary and international research environment
  • Three-year doctoral scholarship of €19,740 gross per year + a housing allowance of €2,200 gross per year. The total amount corresponds to approximately €1,600 net/month.
  • 26 free meals per month at the School’s canteen
  • 50% scholarship increase for research periods abroad
  • Personal budget for research-related expenses (10% of the scholarship)

Eligibility

Applicants with at least one of the following qualifications may participate in the selection, without citizenship restrictions:

  • Laurea Vecchio Ordinamento (Italian University degree obtained before 1999);
  • Laurea magistrale, magistrale a ciclo unico or specialistica (Italian University second level degree);
  • A non-Italian MSc degree recognised as equivalent to the above-mentioned second level academic degrees for the sole purpose of participating in the Call for admission to the Ph.D. programme.

Application

The deadline for the online application is May 15th, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (CEST).

Applicants must have the following documents:

  • Valid identity document
  • Self-certification of the qualification obtained or to be obtained in Italy, including the list of examinations taken
  • Certificate issued by the institution awarding the qualification obtained or to be obtained abroad, including the list of examinations taken
  • Curriculum Vitae et Studiorum
  • Motivation letter
  • Research project (written in English)

All mandatory documents must be submitted; failure to comply will result in exclusion from the call.

Optional documents include:

  • Copy of any other qualifications or publications that the candidate deems relevant to the programme.
  • Academic letters of reference (maximum 3): Candidates are required to include the name, surname, and institutional e-mail address of the Professors they have requested to write the letters of reference. Professors will receive a link to directly upload the letters. The submission deadline for letters is three days after the application deadline.
  • Copy of the MSc degree thesis or the thesis abstract. Candidates who have not obtained their qualification yet should attach a copy of the final draft of the thesis or its abstract.
