Deadline: August 31, 2026

Applications are open for the Global Mental Health Africa Conference (GMHAC) Scholarship 2027. The Science for Africa Foundation and the Mental Health Innovation Network believe that the most important voices in African mental health should have a seat at the table at #GMHAC2027. A limited number of scholarships are available to support individuals who would otherwise be unable to attend due to financial constraints.

Convened by the Science for Africa Foundation (SFA Foundation) and the Mental Health Innovation Network (MHIN) with the support of Wellcome, the Global Mental Health Africa Conference 2027 (#GMHAC2027) will showcase African-led mental health research and innovation, highlighting locally driven solutions with relevance both regionally and globally.

By convening diverse stakeholders and featuring a curated programme of groundbreaking work, the conference will amplify African contributions to global mental health, foster mutual learning and South-to-South exchange in addition to bolstering connections between research, practice, and policy. Through networking, community building, and knowledge sharing, it aims to catalyse collaboration, scale effective innovations, and build momentum for strengthening mental health systems across Africa.

Scholarship

Applicants may request support for any combination of the following:

  • Conference registration fee
  • Travel costs
  • Accommodation
  • Other costs (please specify in your application)

Eligibility

Scholarships are open to individuals in the following categories:

  • Early career researchers working in mental health research, practice, or policy;
  • Students – a letter of support from your institution or supervisor is required;
  • Persons with lived experience of mental health conditions or psychosocial disability;
  • Other applicants with a demonstrated connection to mental health in Africa, please specify your category in the application.

Priority will be given to applicants based in Africa for whom financial support is essential to attend.

  • Motivation statement (maximum 300 words) – why you wish to attend #GMHAC2027 and how it will impact your work
