Call for Proposals: Miami Law & AI (MiLA) Lab AI, Law & Ethics Research Awards 2026

The Miami Law & AI (MiLA) Lab at the University of Miami School of Law, in collaboration with the University of Miami Institute for Bioethics and Health Policy (IBHP), is pleased to announce the AI, Law & Ethics Research Awards 2026. They invite proposals for research, policy, and tool development projects at the intersection of AI, law, and ethics. They seek applications from candidates and teams of diverse backgrounds and from all institutions.

They are open to innovative proposals addressing any aspect of the intersection between AI and law, and they
encourage creative and forward-thinking projects. Applicants can submit proposals in one of the following categories:

  • Theoretical or empirical research projects
  • Policy papers
  • Development of AI-driven proof-of-concept (PoC) tools for the legal domain

Benefits

  • Honorarium of $2,000 per project
  • Access to technical support, including computational resources and a development team
  • Access to research materials
  • Opportunity to present research at MiLA Lab group sessions
  • Mentorship and networking opportunities with leading scholars in AI and law

Eligibility

  • Open to scholars, students, legal practitioners, and technologists with a demonstrated interest in AI and law.
  • They welcome applicants from a wide range of fields, including but not limited to: business and management, computer science, education, engineering, health sciences, bioethics, law, medicine, philosophy, political science, public health, psychology, and other relevant disciplines.
  • Cross-institutional applications, with at least one collaborator from the University of Miami (UM), will be given priority.

Selection Criteria

  • Originality and innovation of the proposal
  • Feasibility of completing the project within the award period
  • Applicant’s qualifications and demonstrated interest in AI and law
  • Potential impact on the field of AI and law
  • Cross-institutional collaboration with a UM faculty member or student (preferred, not required).

Application

Submit a ZIP file containing the following:

  • Research proposal (750–1,000 words) outlining:
    • Application category (research, policy, or tool development project)
    • Title
    • Abstract (up to 150 words)
    • Project description, including the research question or tool development concept
    • If applicable, methodology or development approach
    • Potential impact on the field
    • Timeline with milestones
  • CV or résumé
  • Optional: list of publications, writing sample, code sample
