Applications are open for the Amnesty International Graduate Governance Fellowship 2025. Amnesty International South Africa is looking for a self-motivated, independent person at the start of their career to help them achieve excellence in NGO governance. Candidates should be committed to Amnesty International’s values and goals, and have a demonstrable history of activism in areas related to Amnesty’s work.
The fellowship will run for up to 11 months from the start of January 2025 until the end of November 2025. The fellow will work closely with the Board and the Executive Director and staff, using their legal and policy skillset to develop and support Amnesty’s governance policies and tasks. In addition, the fellow will also benefit from direct exposure to Amnesty’s partners in human rights work through Amnesty’s structured job shadowing partnerships at legal firms and/or public interest law organisations.
Responsibilities
Provide support to Amnesty’s Board of Directors and, on occasion, the National Secretariat, including:
- Researching and drafting Amnesty’s governance and other documents;
- Contributing to discussions around AISA’s national and international governance policy positions;
- Assist the National Secretariat in its research, advocacy and campaigning work.
- Prepare and provide detailed minutes and or reports from relevant AISA board meetings and related
- Applicable administrative support, where required.

Eligibility
- Open to South Africans.
- Applicant must have a law degree (LL.B. or equivalent) or any related degree.
- Fluency in two South African languages is recommended.
Competencies and Skills Required
- Ability to interact with staff at all levels, and communicate clearly and concisely with colleagues.
- Ability to write clearly and concisely (without the need for significant editorial revision) and to proof-read policy, research, campaign and advocacy materials – often under tight timeframes.
- Ability to gather and process large amounts of legal and governance information.
- Ability to make presentations.
- Ability to accurately analyse issues and apply systematic reasoning to formulate a response.
- Ability to work under pressure, meet deadlines and work self-sufficiently with some guidance
- Willingness to travel.
- Flexibility in terms of working hours and the ability to work from home or to travel for work if needed.
