Deadline: November 14, 2025

Applications are open for the Georg Arnhold Senior Fellow for Education for Sustainable Peace 2027. The fellowship aims to promote education for sustainable peace with a particular focus on educational media and curricula at secondary-school level in post-conflict or transitional societies.

Its principal objectives are to bridge the gap between theory and practice, to foster international scholarly exchange, and to translate research findings into practical recommendations for those active in conflict resolution, thereby contributing to civil-society capacity-building. The output from the fellowship holder’s work should therefore preferably be policy papers, educational materials, research papers, or a larger publication.

The fellowship, which includes a research stay of six months at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI) in Brunswick, Germany, offers outstanding and experienced individuals in the field the opportunity to focus on a research – or practice – related project in the area of education for sustainable peace, preferably with a focus on educational media, and to discuss their work with other scholars and practitioners within the GEI’s network.

Benefits

The fellowship is endowed with:

  • a monthly stipend of 3,300 EUR for a fellowship period of six months (in exceptional cases a shorter time frame can also be arranged, the minimum period being three months) at the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media ǀ GEI in Brunswick, Germany
  • return economy airfare to Germany
  • and support with administrative matters and publication work provided by the program coordinators

Eligibility

  • Applications are welcomed from outstanding scholars in the humanities, political and social sciences, education sciences or law, with a project firmly located in the field of peace education. They also welcome applications from distinguished practitioners in the field of peace education with high-level international experience in areas such as journalism, government, or NGO management.
  • Applicants should demonstrate outstanding academic or professional achievement in their field and ideally combine scholarly excellence with hands-on practice and grassroots work.
  • They should have at least five years of advanced professional experience in the area of peace education and demonstrate that their work and/or research projects have made an exceptional impact.

Application

The application and selection process consist of five steps:

  • Online Application: Interested applicants are welcome to complete the online application form, in which they are asked to provide a short summary of up to 1,000 words of their project for the Georg Arnhold Senior Fellowship, compiled with the help of some guiding questions.
  • Pre-selection by the Leibniz Institute for Educational Media | Georg Eckert Institute (GEI): The initial pre-selection of eligible candidates and suitable projects involves a multi-stage selection process at the GEI by academic experts of the institute. Up to 10 applications will be then forwarded to the Academic Advisory Board.
  • Shortlisting by the Academic Advisory Board of the Georg Arnhold Program: The Advisory Board will select the top three candidates for the final selection step.
  • Submission of full proposals by the shortlisted candidates: The three shortlisted top candidates will be invited to submit a full application (including a short CV and a list of publications) and a detailed project proposal via email. The full proposal should be no longer than 25 pages, including references and evidence of the impact they have made in the area of peace education (e. g. oft-cited publications, project websites, success stories, etc.)
  • Final Selection: In order to gain a clear idea of the candidates’ ability to disseminate, communicate and achieve the objectives of their projects each of the three shortlisted candidates will be invited to an online interview with the Academic Advisory Board during the annual board meeting of the Georg Arnhold Program. The successful candidate will be selected at this meeting.
