Deadline: March 16, 2026

Applications are open for the Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship 2026-2027. The Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship at NIAS offers researchers and policymakers the opportunity to work on topics in the fields of monetary economics, macroeconomics and public finance.

During the fellowship, researchers are able to pursue their own research and study their chosen topic in depth in the fields of applied monetary economics, macroeconomics, macroeconomic policy, public finance or public finance policy. The Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship is primarily intended for prominent, experienced mid- to late-career researchers. However, exceptionally talented early-career researchers are also eligible and encouraged to apply.

The stimulating international environment at NIAS provides researchers with the opportunity to work within a multidisciplinary community of scholars. Duisenberg Fellows also have the opportunity to meet with Dutch academics, policymakers and representatives of financial institutions.

Benefits

  • The Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship (WFDF) Foundation offers one five-month or one ten-month fellowship per academic year at NIAS.
  • Fellows are provided with an office at NIAS, access to research facilities and subsidised accommodation (where eligible).
  • Fellows receive a personal stipend or – if affiliated with a Dutch university or research institute – a Dutch University Grant, paid to their institution.
  • A residency at NIAS constitutes a full-time commitment. Fellows are expected to be present at the Institute four working days per week for the duration of their semester.

Eligibility

  • Open to prominent, leading (mid- to late-career) researchers as well as promising early-career talents from the Netherlands or abroad.
  • Candidates must have a minimum of three years of post-PhD academic experience to be considered eligible.
  • Applicants are encouraged to reflect on the collaborative and multidisciplinary environment at NIAS and to consider how their research might both benefit from and contribute to the NIAS research community and beyond.
  • The Willem F. Duisenberg Fellowship (WFDF) Foundation gives particular priority to researchers with an outstanding record in applied monetary economics, macroeconomics, or public finance.
  • The working language at NIAS is English. Applicants must therefore have a good command of English to contribute effectively to the fellows’ community and receive input on their own research.

Application

An application consists of:

  • A completed online application form
  • A full project proposal (max. 1,500 words including footnotes; references and abstract excluded)
  • An up-to-date CV
