Applications are open for the Mathematics in Africa Grant 2026. The London Mathematical Society (LMS) offers a number of different grants schemes to support mathematics, including research grants for mathematicians and computer scientists working at the interface of Maths and computer science; education grants for teachers and other educators; and travel grants to attend conferences, among others.
The objective of the Mathematics in Africa grant is to provide partial support for mathematical activities based in Africa. Activities can include:
- Attendance to mathematical conferences or workshops.
- The organisation of mathematical conferences or workshops.
- Mathematical research collaborations.
Grant
The maximum award is £2,000 (this amount is the upper limit, not the standard award) and covers:
- Mathematical activities based in Africa.
- Travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses.
- In addition, the Society allows the use of the grant award to cover Caring Costs for those attendees who have dependents.
- Visa costs are regarded as part of normal travel expenses.
- The grant will be split into two payments. Half of the value of the grant can be claimed in advance of the activity. The balance of the grant, up to the actual cost of the expenses incurred, will be paid upon receipt of a satisfactory financial and academic report.
- Grants will be paid to a university or institution only; payments will not be made to individual bank accounts.
Eligibility
- Grant applicants can be mathematicians based anywhere in the world but grants will only be awarded for activities taking place within Africa.
- Note that PhD students are not eligible to apply for a Mathematics in Africa grant.
Criteria
- The Society will support only mathematical activities which take place in Africa.
