Deadline: October 10, 2016

Enter the Breakthrough Junior Challenge video contest for a chance to win a $250,000 college scholarship and a trip to Silicon Valley, and Hollywood. Students are invited to make a short film about a big idea in science or math.

The Breakthrough Junior Challenge is an annual global competition for students to inspire creative thinking about science. Students ages 13 to 18 from countries across the globe are invited to create and submit original 5-minute videos that bring to life a concept or theory in the life sciences, physics or mathematics. The Challenge is organized by the Breakthrough Prize Foundation.

About the Breakthrough Prize

The Breakthrough Prize was created to honor important advancements in the categories of Fundamental Physics, Life Sciences and Mathematics. The Breakthrough Prizes were founded by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki, Yuri and Julia Milner, and Mark Zuckerberg and Priscilla Chan. The Breakthrough Prize aims to celebrate the best scientific work and inspire the next generation of scientists.

Prizes

  • The winner will receive $250,000 College Scholarship
  • The winner’s teacher will receive a $50,000 prize, and their school will get a new $100,000 science lab.
  • The winner and their parent or guardian will also be invited to an awards ceremony, where the prize will be presented in front of the superstars of science, Silicon Valley, and Hollywood – United States.

Eligibility

  • Anyone ages 13 through 18 is eligible to enter.
  • Your film can take any form you like: animation, talking head, documentary, dramatic reconstruction, whatever. It’s worth keeping in mind that video is a dynamic visual medium – using diagrams, simulations, physical demonstrations etc. is a lot more effective than standing in front of a blackboard talking.

Judging Criteria

The videos will be judged according to the following criteria:

  • Engagement
  • Illumination
  • Creativity
  • Difficulty

How to Enter

To enter, create a short video explaining a challenging concept in physics, mathematics, or the life sciences in an engaging, illuminating, and creative way.

To take part in the Breakthrough Junior Challenge, create a short video (5 minutes max) to explain a big idea in one of these fields:

  • Physics
  • Mathematics
  • Life Sciences

The winner of the Breakthrough Junior Challenge will be announced at the live
and internationally televised Breakthrough Prize Ceremony on Sunday, December 4, 2016.
