Deadline: November 19, 2017

Are you ready to join the ranks of Kiplinger Fellows — journalists trained to thrive in the Digital Age? The Kiplinger Program in Public Affairs Journalism at Ohio University seeks innovative journalists with a strong desire to reboot their digital skills. The renown digital media fellowship will be held April 16-20, 2018 in Columbus and at the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism at Ohio University in Athens.

Selected Fellows will spend a week at Ohio University’s beautiful main campus in Athens, immersed in hands-on training led by national experts. Topics include social media for reporting, branding and audience engagement; spreadsheets and data visualization; smartphone videography; and media ethics. They’ll help you sharpen reporting skills to hold government and institutions accountable.

Kiplinger Fellows have been chosen from some of the most influential newsrooms across the United States and around the globe. Journalists have been selected from the Associated Press, BBC, CBS News, Chicago Tribune, CNN, Los Angeles Times, National Public Radio, NBC News, New York Times, PBS Newshour, Slate, USA Today, Univision, Washington Post and dozens of other news organizations. International journalists have traveled to Ohio State from Afghanistan, China, Colombia, Great Britain, Greece, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Panama, the Philippines, Spain, Sweden, Ukraine and other nations.

Cost and Benefits

  • The highly coveted fellowships provide lodging, most meals and free training – thanks to the generosity of the Kiplinger Foundation and Kiplinger family.
  • Limited travel stipends are available to international fellows (totally no more than half of the airfare)
  • U.S. Fellows will be asked to pay their transportation to and from Ohio.

Eligibility

  • Open to print, broadcast or online journalists from around the world.
  • You need at least five years of professional experience to apply (yes, internships count).
    • Internships and freelance work count, if you worked at least 20 hours a week.
  • Applicants need to have a command of spoken and written English to benefit from the fellowship. They will not have translators.
  • Your three work samples must be in English as well. If your work as a journalist requires that you write in another language other than English, you must provide originals and English translations.

Application

  • To apply, click here: Kiplinger Fellowship 2018.
  • Helpful hint: Please allow 30-45 minutes for the application process.
  • Before you begin, you might want to write these four pieces, which you then can copy and paste into the application:
    1. A short bio (maximum of 150 words).
    2. A short explanation of how the Kiplinger Fellowship would benefit you and your newsroom (maximum of 200 words).
    3. Web links to three recent stories that showcase your talent. International journalists whose work does not appear in English must supply English translations of three stories (details below).
    4. Two references who know your work well (name, title, organization, email, phone).
  • Only fully completed applications with the correct number of samples and with English translations (if needed) will be accepted.

If you have questions, please contact Kevin Z. Smith at [email protected] or 614-688-7464.
