The Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health is now accepting applications for the 2018 Takemi Program in International Health, which seeks to improve health and health systems around the world. Each year the program recruits a small group of mid-career researchers and professionals to spend an academic year at the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health conducting path breaking research and develop their leadership skills.
The Takemi Program provides participants with the space, time, and flexibility to enhance their capacity for research and leadership. To do this, Fellows are linked to two key resources: the weekly Takemi Seminar Series, and expert faculty. In addition, Fellows have the opportunity for collaboration throughout the Harvard community, and may elect to deepen their knowledge of theory or practice through relevant coursework. Fellows draw on these resources to produce at least one paper of publishable quality.
Fellows’ Responsibility
Over the course of the Program, Fellows are expected to:
- Meet regularly with their faculty advisor to receive feedback on their project and assistance with their progress.
- Attend and participate in the Takemi Program weekly seminar
- Present research progress throughout the year via scheduled Preliminary, Mid-year, and Final presentations
- Submit a final paper of publishable quality before departing
In addition to this, Takemi Fellows are encouraged to:
- Audit classes at Harvard Chan School
- Attend Harvard Chan School seminars
- Attend Office of Faculty Affairs sponsored Postdoctoral Fellows courses
Cost
Please note that the Takemi Program does not provide funding. Should you be accepted into the Program, Fellows are expected to begin their appointments on August 1 for 11 months. We encourage applicants to review the list of funding sources past fellows have found useful here . Below are estimated costs for the 2018-2019 Fellowship year.
Available Funding
- Ford Foundation Funding: In collaboration with the Ford Foundation, they will support for two West African Takemi Fellows for 2018-2019. Ford Foundation-supported Fellows will be provided $48,000 to cover living, health insurance, travel, and research expenses.
- JPMA Funding: The funding will provide partial financial support to two Takemi Fellows per year. Candidates should indicate their interest in JPMA funding support in a brief cover letter accompanying their application materials.

Eligibility
Applicants should:
- be mid-career researchers who have completed graduate degrees
- have published in internationally recognized journals,
- have demonstrated potential leadership capacity in their home countries.
- show strong promise and appropriate preparation (including facility in English) to enable them to fully benefit from the experience.
- have made, or intend to make, a commitment to a career in health for which participation in the Program will be of significant value.
- come from any relevant discipline or profession (e.g., medicine, law, public health, economics, management, and social sciences).

The application contains the following components:

- Proof of English Language Proficiency (PDF Upload)
- Test results from a recognized English language test, e.g. TOEFL (100+ score) or IELTS (7+ score).
- Documentation from an academic institution where you were registered as a student and completed a degree program, where instruction was provided in English. Diplomas, transcripts, I-20s/DS-2019s, or signed letters on letterhead from a registrar’s office would all serve as suitable documentation.

- The Proposal must include the following (page limits are only suggestions): title page; summary of the proposed project including a brief statement of specific aims and objectives and potential significance of the research (1/2 page); specific aims (1/2 to 1 page); background and significance (1/2 to 1 page); data sources (1/2 to 1 page); research design and methods (2 pages); references. Please note that data should be collected and ready for analysis before arriving to the Program. The full proposal should be no more than 5 pages (excluding the title page and references), single spaced, 12 point Times New Roman font.
