Rhodes Trust has announced two new Global Rhodes Scholarships, marking a historic moment for the Trust, as candidates from anywhere in the world will be able to apply to the Scholarships for the first time in the programme’s 115 year history. The Rhodes Scholarships are postgraduate awards supporting exceptional students from around the world to study at the University of Oxford, United Kingdom.
The Rhodes Scholarship is the oldest and the most prestigious international scholarship programme in the world, which aims to nurture public-spirited leaders for the world’s future. The Scholarship aims to nurture public-spirited leaders for the world’s future. They offer scholarships in over 20 Rhodes constituencies (64 different countries) worldwide.
Until now, Scholarships have been awarded in 20 Rhodes constituencies (representing over 60 different countries) around the world. This year, over 100 Rhodes Scholarships will be on offer, and two new Global Scholarships allow eligible candidates from the rest of the world to be nominated by their University.
Scholars may pursue any full-time postgraduate degree (subject to limited restrictions) offered by the University of Oxford, for a duration of 2-3 years. Whilst at Oxford Scholars enjoy a comprehensive Rhodes Character, Service & Leadership programme, inclusive of retreats, workshops, conferences, as well as many discussion and social events at Rhodes House, Oxford. The Rhodes Scholarship is a lifelong, intergenerational fellowship of over 5000 individuals, resident in over 100 countries worldwide.
Scholarship Benefits
The Scholarship includes
- full tuition
- a maintenance stipend
- flights to and from Oxford at the beginning and end of tenure.
Eligibility
- The Global Scholarships will be available to candidates from any country that is not an existing Rhodes jurisdiction.
- If you are a young person of outstanding intellect, character, leadership, and commitment to service, you could be a candidate for the Rhodes Scholarship
- You must have reached your 18th birthday and not have passed your 24th birthday on 1 October in the year of application.
- Rhodes Scholars must have completed a Bachelor’s degree before coming up to Oxford, to a sufficiently high standard to meet both the Rhodes and the Oxford criteria.
Selection Criteria
Though expressed in the old-fashioned language of the founding documents, the selection criteria governing selection across all Rhodes constituencies remain as relevant today as they were over 100 years ago:
- literary and scholastic attainments (academic excellence)
- energy to use one’s talents to the full (as demonstrated by mastery in areas such as sports, music, debate, dance, theatre, and artistic pursuits, particularly where teamwork is involved)
- truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselfishness and fellowship
- moral force of character and instincts to lead, and to take an interest in one’s fellow beings.
These are the essential qualities which Selection Committees are looking for, though their embodiment will be diverse and unique to each individual.

Application
Applications open in early summer 2018.
- Applications for Rhodes Scholarships open during the summer of the year before entry to Oxford, for example Summer 2018 applications would be for entry to Oxford in 2019 (see Timeline, below).
- Potential candidates should go to www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/apply and will need to seek nomination from their university.
- The selection process will conclude by the end of 2018 and the new Scholars will arrive in Oxford in October 2019.

- Check the entry requirements for your chosen course at Oxford

- Check the Rhodes Conditions of Tenure
- If English is not your first language, you may be asked to provide evidence of proficiency – check the specific requirements for your country/region’s Information for Candidates, and see Oxford’s requirements for English Language proficiency.
Subject to limited restrictions, Rhodes Scholars may read for any full-time postgraduate degree (including the BA with senior status over two years) at the University of Oxford, see the detailed Conditions of Tenure. The tenure of the Scholarship is two years, subject always to satisfactory academic performance and personal conduct. Subject to an application process, the Scholarship may be extended for a third year for those who take a recognised route to the DPhil (PhD).
Note to applicants: A Rhodes Scholarship is confirmed once a successful candidate has been offered a place at the University of Oxford.
