Deadline: May 15, 2019

The African Leadership Centre, King’s College London (UK), in conjunction with the Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations are delighted to be collaborating on a project Interdisciplinary and collaborative research on peace and security: Publishing and grant writing workshop for Early Career Researchers in Eastern Africa funded by the British Academy.

The aim of the project is to support ECRs to develop and/or enhance the capacity to prepare successful research grant proposals, write for publication in international journals and carry out collaborative interdisciplinary work. The broader aim is to increase in the uptake of Peace and Security related journal articles written by Early Career Peace and Security Scholars especially women who are based in the Eastern African region.

Programme Details

Research by the ALC has shown that those who publish in international journals increase the opportunities of influencing policy, publications are also a measure when applying for grant opportunities; thus there is an overriding imperative to support ECRs including and especially women to develop and/or enhance the capacity to write for publication in international journals; prepare successful research grant proposals and undertake collaborative interdisciplinary research.

The project, is funded by the British Academy, and seeks to develop the writing capacity of Peace and Security, Early Career Researchers (ECRs) from Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania, Ethiopia and South Sudan, facilitated by established and early career academics from the African Leadership Centre (ALC) at King’s College London; the Editor of the Conflict Security and Development Journal; a workshop facilitator from Cloud Chamber (UK) and Kenyan based academics from Hekima Institute of Peace Studies and International Relations (HIPSIR).

The Workshop will be a mix of writing principles and strategies on successful dissemination of research findings through international publication; preparing successful research proposals and; undertaking collaborative interdisciplinary research. The sessions will be themed around the fields of peace, security and development which is a rich context for successful interdisciplinary work. Participation in the project involves attendance at a two-day writing workshop in Nairobi, Kenya on July 16 and 17, 2019.
