The Tom Lantos Institute (TLI) and the National University of Public Service (NUPS) in co-operation with the Middlesex University (MU), London, and with the support of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Hungary are inviting interested and passionate individuals to apply for their second international Summer School on Minority Rights with a special focus on civil society, political participation and minority rights.

The Summer School will host 30 participants from all over the world and offers a forum to discuss relevant issues related to minorities with leading experts and practitioners in the field of ethnocultural diversity management.

The Summer School aims to:

  • Assess & critique the dynamics and dilemmas of the current international minority protection regime;
  • Review civil society experiences on minority rights advocacy in different regions of the world;
  • Identify the role and impact of civil society contributions to norm emergence and adherence in the field of identity politics.

Benefits: 

  • The Global Minority Rights Summer School focuses on the different regional challenges of ethno-cultural diversity management. Participants develop an overview of the existing international minority protection regime and gain familiarity with existing minority protection policy regimes in Africa, the Middle-East, the Pacific and Europe.
  • The Summer School provides inter-active academic lectures, networking opportunities for stakeholders operating in the field of minority protection, and an opportunity to share experiences and discuss emerging research projects.
  • The programme is complemented with interesting and informative cultural events including a day-long visit to Vojvodina, Serbia.

Participation fee (17 scholarship available):

  • The participation fee is 150 euros. This fee covers tuition, accommodation, meals and cultural events.

General eligibility:

The program is open to:

  • Civil servants, decision-makers, teachers in higher education and public officials who deal primarily with ethnocultural minority related issues;
  • MA and PhD students who wish to acquire competitive personal competence beneficial for their future careers in academia or in practice-oriented professions;
  • Members of civil society organizations, practitioners;
  • Everyone who is interested in recent developments, current theories and advanced training in the field of minority protection.

Eligibility for scholarship:

17 scholarships are offered by the TLI and the NUPS primarily but not exclusively to members from ethnic or national, linguistic, and religious minorities. Twelve scholarships cover the participation fee (tuition, accommodation, meals, and cultural events). Five scholarships only for applicants from outside of Europe cover the participation fee and the travel costs to Budapest. Applicants for scholarship have to have:

  • current interest or work in the field;
  • motivation to improve their understanding and skills;
    • plans for future activities or career where they can use the knowledge, contacts and skills acquired.

  • Curriculum Vitae
  • Letter of Motivation (max. 500 words): Describe your fields of academic and professional interest and career goals. Indicate your motivation for participating in the course, and how it will contribute to your professional development.
  • A good command of English is required as the language of the Summer School will be English.
