Applications for the International Crisis Group Giustra Fellowship Program 2019 are now open. The International Crisis Group is looking for a fellow to support the Africa Program and specifically their work on the Jihadi contagion in Gulf of Guinea countries; Guinea; Côte d’Ivoire. The fellowship will be for a duration of 2 years. The fellow will be fully incorporated into the Program as a full-time staff member and perform similar work to full-time research staff. The fellow will be based in Dakar.
This fellowship is envisioned as an early career training program. Thus, the fellow will learn on the job, by carrying out the work of a Crisis Group analyst but with close supervision and collaboration from Program leadership and colleagues. The fellow will work closely with the Project Director to support research work on the Jihadi contagion in Coastal West Africa countries, as well as Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire.
He/she will interact consistently with analysts throughout the program. The fellow will have access to internal training and workshops, take part in research trips in the region, and/or travel for the purpose of policy engagement. She/he will also spend time in the advocacy office in Brussels and other advocacy offices as relevant.
Training and analysis will emphasize the following areas:
- Research and research methodology
- Report writing
- Policy engagement and advocacy
- Security (including IT security and liability)
- Gender awareness
- Media
Roles and Responsibilities
Under the supervision of the Project Director, Rinaldo Depagne, the fellow will engage in and be exposed to the full range of activities that constitute Crisis Group’s operational methodology. The fellow will carry out field-based research on conflict in West Africa, particularly in Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea, Ghana, Togo and Benin in support of Crisis Group’s efforts to analyse the political, social and economic factors contributing to conflict and develop proposed solutions.
Responsibilities include:
- To perform field-based research on and related to conflict in the North of Gulf of Guinea countries under Sahelian armed groups pressure; Guinea and Côte d’Ivoire. Research should involve conversations with a great variety of sources, including key figures in local and national government, opposition, security institutions, media, and civil society.
- On the basis of the field research, the fellow will help formulate policy recommendations that advocate concrete measures to mitigate and resolve conflict, and respond to emerging threats in the region. Recommendations should be directed to governmental and other actors in the region (as appropriate), as well as other governments and international/regional institutions engaged with conflict.
- The fellow will also assist in the Program’s advocacy activities related to conflict prevention and mitigation in Abuja, Abidjan, Conakry, Accra, Addis Ababa and eventually any relevant stakeholders capital. The key elements of the advocacy are:
- Targeted Outreach. This may include: regular seminars and policy roundtables; one-on-one briefings for senior government officials and diplomatic representatives; media briefings; and interviews.
- Media Outreach. This may include: press conferences, circulation of press releases, background briefings, embargoed pre-release of key reports, on-the-record interviews and placement of Crisis Group-authored op-eds in leading newspapers; and use of social media to propagate our policy analysis and prescriptions.
Within the 2-year programme, it is expected that the fellow will participate in or contribute to the following outputs:
- Two to four published reports or briefing papers;
- The monthly internal situation report and CrisisWatch publication;
- One or two op-eds in local or international newspapers;
- One to three policy seminars and roundtable meetings in key capitals;
- Approximately six policymaker briefings.
Eligibility
- Applicant should have at least 2 years of working experience in the region;
- Have a degree in political science, international relations, law or other relevant discipline;
- Have knowledge of political and social dynamics of the West African region;
- Have strong analytical skills and excellent writing skills;
- Is fluent in French and English.
