Deadline: January 31, 2020

The Africa Oxford Initiative (AfOx) is currently accepting applications for the AfOx Visiting Fellows Programme. The AfOx Visiting Fellows Programme is designed to enhance academic mobility and network building. The program supports mid-career African researchers to undertake a Fellowship of 2 months at the University of Oxford.

During the Fellowship, AfOx Fellows are associated with a department and college within the University. Fellows could be working with any of the University’s departments during the Fellowship period. Our partner colleges are:  All Souls College, Brasenose College, Christ Church College, Hertford College, Jesus College, Lady Margaret Hall, Merton College, Somerville College, St.Edmund Hall, St Peter’s College, Wadham College, Wolfson College

The scheme will be for a period of 8 weeks from July 2020 to August 2020. Except AfOx TORCH and AfOx TRADE Fellowships (September 2020 to October 2020).

Fellowship Schemes

There are six Fellowship schemes under the AfOx Visiting Fellows Programme:

  • AfOx Collaborative Fellowship
    • Open to all disciplines. Applicants need to have a collaborator based at the University of Oxford before applying.
  • AfOx Law Fellowship
    • The Faculty of Law in the University of Oxford is one of the largest in the United Kingdom.
  • AfOx TRADE Fellowship
    • The AfOx TRADE fellowships target researchers and practitioners addressing the challenges that humanity faces in halting the decline of global biodiversity. They will work together with Oxford researchers on TRADE Hub related research projects.
  • AfOx TORCH Fellowship
    • Launched in May 2013, TORCH provides an important opportunity for Oxford’s humanities scholars to collaborate with researchers across other disciplines and institutions and develop partnerships with public and private institutions.
  • AfOx ASC Fellowship
    • Oxford University’s African Studies Centre is one of the world’s leading centres of African Studies. The Centre enjoys a reputation for high quality, relevant research that plays a leading role in academic debates as well as public policy.
  • AfOx Nekton Fellowship
    • Launched in May 2013, TORCH provides an important opportunity for Oxford’s humanities scholars to collaborate with researchers across other disciplines and institutions and develop partnerships with public and private institutions.

Benefits

  • The fellowships will cover one economy return ticket, an en-suite study bedroom for accommodation and a  modest stipend for incidental expenses.
  • A temporary University card and temporary membership to an Oxford College Senior Common Room will be granted for the period of residency. The fellows will have access to relevant libraries, departments, archives and other resources

Eligibility

  • Visiting Fellows must be of postdoctoral or equivalent status at the time of application. Applicants must be holding an appointment in an African academic or research institution at the time of application.

Applicants will be required to submit a brief report within one year of the award to give details of outputs arising from the collaborative visit.

Application

Applications will be reviewed primarily on the quality and value added of the proposed research agenda, the fit between the applicant and the Oxford host, and the feasibility of the proposed activities in the timescale of the fellowship.
