Deadline: February 14, 2021

Pitch your climate innovation and stand a chance to win £5,000 funding and coaching to bring your idea to life in the British Council #DestinationZero Challenge 2021.

Northeastern University Global Study Expo 2026

The #DestinationZero is an innovation challenge for people aged 18 to 35 who want to tackle climate change and make a positive difference to the world. They are looking for ideas that will help communities move closer to zero carbon emissions or adapt to the effects of climate change.

Prizes

You will receive:

  • £5,000 financial support for each winning innovation by the end of March 2021.
  • Coaching sessions between April to August 2021.

If your innovation is at the idea phase, this financial and technical support will help to prototype it. If the innovation has already been tested, the support will help in its implementation.

Eligibility

  • Applications from a diverse range of candidates are welcomed.
  • You must be 18 to 35 when you apply, and be a resident of one of these countries: Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Argentina, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bangladesh, Botswana, Brazil, China, Colombia, Cuba, Egypt, Ethiopia, Georgia, Ghana, India, Indonesia, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kenya, Kosovo, Lebanon, Libya, Malawi, Malaysia, Mauritius, Mexico, Morocco, Mozambique, Myanmar, Namibia, Nepal, Nigeria, Occupied Palestinian Territories, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Rwanda, Senegal, Sierra Leone, South Africa, South Sudan, Sri Lanka, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Tunisia, Turkey, Uganda, Ukraine, United Kingdom, Uzbekistan, Venezuela, Vietnam, Yemen, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
  • Participants must be living in their respective country at the time of applying and for the duration of this project.
  • You can apply as an individual or as part of the group, and you can submit more than one innovation.

Judging Process

The panel will choose ten innovations based on:

  • What problem are you trying to solve? (25%): They are looking for a clear explanation of the climate change issue your innovation deals with and how this issue is relevant to your own community.
  • How will your innovation will affect climate change? (50%): They want to hear how your innovation will address the issues you have outlined. They particularly welcome innovations that have a positive effect on women and girls, people from marginalised communities, and other groups most vulnerable to the effects of climate change.
  • How realistically have you budgeted for your innovation? (25%)

Application

Share a 60 second video with the hashtag #DestinationZero on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or YouTube.

In the video, say your first name, your age and where you are from, then pitch your climate innovation idea. Innovations could include new business models, new scientific innovations, community initiatives or climate warning systems.

The deadline is 14 February 2021 at 23.59 UK time.
