Avoid These Common Resume Mistakes at All Costs

Even if you have the right qualifications, leaving mistakes on your resume could be the difference between getting that interview and being denied the opportunity.

Making your application successful can be a big task.

If you want your resume to get to the hiring manager, it is best to avoid these common resume mistakes below to maximize your chances of success.

1. Errors in Spelling and Grammar

This might seem like an obvious point, but it is important to make sure your resume is free from spelling and grammatical errors. This is one of the biggest issues recruiters have found with applications. If you are unsure of how well your resume is put together, get someone else to take a look at your application.

2. Having Missing or Incorrect Contact Information

The whole point of a job application is so you can get that interview you want. Having contact information that is missing or incorrect is only going to make it more difficult for any recruiters to get in touch.

You may also be considered as less conscious of details – if you can’t provide contact information that is right, how will perform within your job?

3. Being Unable to Demonstrate Results

When recruiters are looking through your resume, they want to know what you’ve been able to achieve in your past roles. This lets them know that you are well suited to the position they are hiring for and that you can fulfill certain objectives.

To show these results, you need to outline what you have been able to achieve using your skills. This can include how you increased sales, boosted return on investment or anything else that is notable. If you are unable to provide these results, it may show you are a bad fit for the role.

4. Being Too Generalized

When putting together your resume for your job, you need to make sure it fits the job specification very well. While you do not need to completely create a new resume for every job, it is important that your resume is edited and tailored for the job you are applying for. Good recruiters are able to tell if you are using the same resume for every job application.

4. Including Your Headshot

With resumes for formal jobs, there is no need to include any pictures. This may be different for a role such as an actor, but for anyone else, you should stick to copy. Having a headshot in a formal Job may seem a little egotistical.

6. Incorrect Formatting or Complex Design

When putting a resume together it is better to make sure information is clear and easy to read. You should have a design that makes use of space and allows recruiters to skim for the information they need.

The more complex your resume is, the bigger the chance that recruiters will throw away your application. You can remedy this by making use of online resume templates.

Avoiding Common Resume Mistakes

Make note of these common resume mistakes and you’ll be able to get the applications you want. Surpassing your competition means helping recruiters find what they need to find as quickly and as easily as possible.
