Deadline: September 1, 2025

Applications are open for the KBr Photo Award 2025. This is an international competition organized every two years by Fundación MAPFRE. This award seeks to recognize and highlight photographers with an established professional career whose work demonstrates artistic values of particular interest within the tradition of documentary photography.

The prize, which is awarded to unpublished projects, seeks to acknowledge and promote the work of the winner through a cash prize, an exhibition showcasing the project in the Foundation’s two galleries (KBr and Madrid), and the publication of an accompanying catalog.

With this initiative Fundación MAPFRE is increasing its support for photography in the context of the KBr’s programme. Alongside the exhibitions, lecture cycles and activities associated with the programme, the new KBR Photo Award both consolidates and expands the Fundación’s activities relating to contemporary photography.

Prize

  • The prize is 25,000 Euros.
  • In addition, Fundación MAPFRE will organise and present an exhibition in the Espaci 2 at the KBr Fundación MAPFRE Barcelona Photo Center.
  • The project will also be presented in May of the same year in the exhibition spaces of Fundación MAPFRE in Madrid. Together with the two exhibitions, the selected project will be accompanied by a catalogue published by Fundación MAPFRE.

    Eligibility

    • The KBr Photo Award is open to Spanish and non-Spanish photographers aged over 18 who will produce a new photographic project or complete an already undertaken one, both previously unpublished and which have not been entered for any other similar competition.
    • Candidates must already have a career in which they have already had at least one individual exhibition or have one publication.

    Selection Process

The selection process comprises 2 stages:

    • Stage 1: A pre-selection committee at Fundación MAPFRE will assess all the entries and select the entries considered most suitable for presentation to the jury.
    • Stage 2: An international jury will select the winning entry. The jury will consist of 4 members who are prestigious figures in the international art world, selected by Fundación MAPFRE, in addition to the chief curator of photography of said institution.
