Applications are open for the African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) Internship Program 2026. The African Population and Health Research Center (APHRC) is a premier research-to-policy institution, generating evidence, strengthening research and related capacity in the African research and development ecosystem, and engaging policy to inform action on health and development. APHRC seeks to drive change by developing strong African research leadership and promoting evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) across sub-Saharan Africa.

The Center, through its Research and Related Capacity Strengthening (RRCS) Program, seeks to strengthen individual and institutional research capacity to enable African researchers to fully participate in defining and implementing priority population and health programs on the continent. As part of individual capacity strengthening efforts, APHRC has, over the years, been running a demand-driven internship program whose objective is to nurture talented young Africans to become future scholars, research leaders and aligned professionals.

For the 2026 period, the Program has opened internship opportunities in the following projects and departments for 3-6 months, starting May 2026.

  • Project 4 – Codesign, Implementation and Evaluation of an Integrated Care Model for Patients with Multiple Cardiometabolic and Mental Health Conditions in sub-Saharan Africa (M-Care): a Cluster Randomized Hybrid Type III Trial in Kenya
  • Project 5 – Data Science Program – Platform Testing and Quality Assurance
  • Project 6 – Data Science Program – Software Development
  • Project 7 – Consortium for Advanced Research Training in Africa (CARTA) Research Hub on Social Exclusion in Adolescence in Africa
  • Project 8 – Facilities Projects
  • Project 9 – Repositing Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR) in Africa
  • Project 10 – Challenging the Politics of Social Exclusion (CPSE) – Abortion (Nisaidie Usinidhuru)
  • Project 11 – Catalyze Impact Initiative
  • Project 12 –  Consortium for Africa Cross-Border Evidence and Policy Sovereignty (CACEPS) (Work Package #6)
  • Project 13 – Addressing the Neglected Areas of Sexual and Reproductive Health

Responsibilities

Generally, successful candidates will be expected to:

  • Work with the assigned supervisor to develop a set of objectives for the internship, a work plan, and to deliver on the objectives.
  • Work closely with the assigned supervisor to provide frequent project updates and reports etc.
  • Contribute to policy engagement and strategic planning as may be needed.
  • Make at least one brown bag presentation (BBP) about their work at APHRC.
  • Submit a written report at least 1 week before the end of their internship.
  • Submit an internship/visiting scholar feedback form.
  • Participate in the internship follow- up evaluation survey.

Eligibility

  • Either completed a bachelor’s degree in the last six months; and/or pursuing/completing a master’s degree in any of the following areas: population studies/demography, statistics, epidemiology, economics, social sciences, or related discipline.
  • Quantitative and qualitative analytical skills are desired for research internships.
  • This call is open to nationals of sub-Saharan African countries.
  • The internship will be hybrid, with the expectation that the intern will be physically available when required for internship activities.

Application

The application process has two steps. The first step is to complete a short online survey HERE. The second step involves sending as one PDF an application containing:

  • Your curriculum vitae (2 pages max)
  • Your certificate of completed undergraduate degree or master’s degree.
  • Other certificate(s) that may be relevant for your internship application.
  • 1-2 letters of recommendation (each 1-page max, one of which must be from a previous or current academic supervisor) supporting your suitability for the internship.

The document is to be sent via email to [email protected] with “2026 INTERNSHIP” as the subject line of the email. Incomplete or late applications will not be considered.
