Applications are now open for the 2018 Food Sustainability Media Award. The Food Sustainability Media Award aims to recognise the work of professional journalists and emerging talent from all over the world for excellence in reporting and communicating issues related to food security, sustainability, agriculture and nutrition.

The Award, which aims to highlight innovative solutions to today’s food challenges is an initiative of Thomson Reuters Foundation and Barilla Center for Food and Nutrition.

Categories

Entries to the Food Sustainability Media Award will be judged in two categories:

  1. Written journalism: This category recognises excellence in written journalism for a news/feature article published in print or online that addresses topics, stories or issues related to food sustainability through distinctive, accurate and original reporting.
  2. Multimedia: This category honours exceptional video, photography and audio content that sheds light on stories related to food sustainability through in-depth visual and audio storytelling and original and creative use of a chosen medium.

For each category they will award both one published and one unpublished piece of work. Published and unpublished finalists in both categories will be put forward for the Best of the Web Award. The winner of this award will be chosen by the public.

Prizes

  • Winning published work in the written journalism and multimedia categories will receive a €10,000 cash prize.
  • Winning unpublished work in the written journalism and multimedia categories will receive an all-expenses paid trip to attend a Thomson Reuters Foundation media training course on food sustainability.
  • Both winning unpublished entries will be distributed via the Thomson Reuters Foundation and the BCFN websites.
  • The winning unpublished written work will also be distributed by the Thomson Reuters Foundation via the Reuters wire, reaching an estimated 1 billion readers.

Eligibility

Written Journalism (Published)

  • open to professional staff journalists, bloggers, freelancers and individuals.
  • All entries should focus on stories and issues around the theme of food sustainability.
  • Individuals may submit a maximum of one entry per category.
  • Materials entered under this category must have been previously published or distributed by a newspaper, magazine or news site that publishes at least weekly and adheres to the highest journalistic principles.
  • For this category, entries must have been published or distributed between May 2017 and May 2018.
  • Entrants must submit their individual and personal work.
  • Only one single article can be submitted. A series of articles will not be accepted.
  • All entries must be submitted in English (or translated into English).
  • The suggested length of work submitted for this category is no longer than 3000 words.

Written Journalism (Unpublished)

  • This category is open to professional staff journalists, bloggers, freelancers and individuals.
  • All entries should focus on stories and issues around the theme of food sustainability.
  • Individuals may submit a maximum of one entry per category.
  • In this category, only unpublished and original materials will be eligible for submission.
  • Only one single article can be submitted. A series of articles will not be accepted.
  • Entrants must submit their individual and personal work.
  • All entries must be submitted in English (or translated into English).
  • The suggested length of work submitted for this category is no longer than 1500 words.

Multimedia (Published)

  • Open to professional staff journalists, freelancers, bloggers and individuals.
  • All entries should focus on stories and issues around the theme of food sustainability.
  • Individuals may submit a maximum of one entry per category.
  • Materials entered under this category must have been previously distributed, published, broadcasted or screened by a news website, newspaper, magazine, TV channel, audio channel (e.g. radio, podcast), film festival (or event) or an established website or blog.
  • For this category, entries must have been published or distributed between May 2017 and May 2018.
  • Entrants must submit their individual and personal work.
  • All entries must be submitted in English (or translated into English).
  • Only one single video or audio submission can be entered for this category. For photography submissions, both single pictures and photography series will be accepted as entries. Eligible video submissions include animations.
  • All entries must be submitted with a description, including details of the device used to capture them for video and photography submissions. All pictures in a photography series must also be individually captioned.
  • Photography entries must not be digitally altered significantly beyond standard optimisation, as in cropping, adjustments to exposure, colour and contrast.
  • The suggested length of video and audio submissions is no longer than 20 minutes. Photography series should feature no more than 20 individual pictures.
  • Entries can be submitted from 15th January 2018 to midnight on 31st May 2018 (London time).

Multimedia (Unpublished)

  • Open to professional staff journalists, freelancers, bloggers and individuals.
  • All entries should focus on stories and issues around the theme of food sustainability.
  • Individuals may submit a maximum of one entry per category.
  • For this category, only unpublished and original materials will be eligible.
  • Entrants must submit their individual and personal work.
  • All entries must be submitted in English (or translated into English).
  • Only one single video or audio submission can be entered for this category. For photography submissions, both single pictures and photography series will be accepted as entries. Eligible video submissions include animations.
  • All entries must be submitted with a description, including details of the device used to capture them for video and photography submissions. All pictures in a photography series must also be individually captioned.
  • Photography entries must not be digitally altered significantly beyond standard optimisation, as in cropping, adjustments to exposure, colour and contrast. There should be no additions or deletions to original pictures and they should not mislead the viewer by manipulating of the tonal and colour balance to disguise any elements of an image or to change the context.
  • The suggested length of video and audio submissions is no longer than 20 minutes. Photography series should feature no more than 20 individual pictures.

Entries can be submitted from 15th January 2018 to midnight on 31st May 2018 (London time).
