Call for Participation: Apply to Speak at the 2018 Grace Hopper Celebration (GHC) in Texas, United States. The Grace Hopper Celebration is the world’s largest gathering of women technologists. It is produced by AnitaB.org and presented in partnership with ACM. GHC 18 will be Sep. 26–28 in Houston, TX.

Tracks

GHC 18 tracks offer a wide-range of fields for every technical woman. Speakers will participate in presentations, panels, or workshops. They are actively looking for and encourage you to submit intermediate and advanced level content.

  • All track sessions (this excludes Mentoring Circles and Poster Session)
  • Mentoring Circles (formerly Student Opportunity Lab)

Eligibility

General Requirements (Except Poster)

  • Word count: Maximum 400 characters abstract. Maximum four page proposal: three pages for submission content and one page for speaker bios. Only abstract will be published for attendees. We will not edit these, so pay attention to grammar.
  • Font size: Minimum 10-point font. Use a common font such as Arial, Calibri, or Times New Roman.
  • Audience: If this is a career-related submission, tag the submission based on your target audience. Understanding of the audience and tailoring the submission ensures a higher chance of success. If your submission is accepted, the audience label will be at the discretion of the track co-chairs.
  • Expertise Level: If this is a technical submission, tag this to be at the Beginner, Intermediate, or Advanced level at the time of submission. If your submission is accepted, the audience label will be at the discretion of the track co-chairs.
  • Templates: Use the starter template indicated in each section below to help you get started. You may add sections provided the proposal is within the page limits specified. If you choose to use your own template, you must still include all the sections listed in your template to ensure consistency.
  • Submission limit: You may only submit one proposal per submission type.

Specific Requirements

Panel

  • Open to Subject matter expert from industry, academia, or government labs.
  • Number of panelists: One moderator and three to four panelists. No two people from the same organization (company or institution) can be on the same panel. Please indicate in your submission if the moderator has had previous experience moderating a panel.
  • Presentation time: 60 minutes
  • Room type: Theater style seating

Presentation

  • Open to Doctoral students and subject matter experts from industry, academia, or government labs.
  • Number of presenters: One presenter per presentation. Tag-Team presentations are not permitted.
  • Presentation Time: Plan on 20 minutes total, including Q&A.
  • Room type: Theater style seating

Workshop

  • Open to Subject matter expert from industry, academia or government labs
  • Two to three facilitators
  • Presentation Time: 60 minutes
  • Room type: Banquet style (round table seating)
  • Room size: Audience size can be up to 400 attendees and cannot be limited by speaker.

Mentoring Circles (formerly Student Opportunity Lab – SOL)

  • Open to Doctoral students and subject matter experts from industry, academia or government labs
  • One to two mentors per submission
  • Each mentoring session will be 20 minutes.
  • Banquet style (round table seating)

General Poster Session Requirements

  • Open to undergraduate and graduate university or college students, faculty members, and industry professionals.
  • Number of presenters: Only one presenter per poster
  • Topics: Technical computer science research, computer science education, or broadening participation in computer science
  • Submission format: Your submission will consist of two components: a proposal and an abstract.

ACM Student Research Competition Requirements

The submission process for the ACM Student Research Competition (ACM SRC) is the same as the general poster session. In the submission form, you will need to indicate that you want to be considered for the ACM SRC. Submissions for the ACM SRC should describe the results of recently completed or ongoing computer science research conducted primarily by the individual student.

  • Eligibility criteria:
    • Undergraduate or graduate students currently enrolled in a university or college may apply.
    • Undergraduate students may submit a team project, but only one student will present the poster at GHC.
    • Graduate students may NOT submit a team project; only individual research is accepted. If a graduate student is part of a group research project, they may submit only their individual contribution to the group research project.
    • Students must be ACM members. If you are not an ACM member at the time of submission, you must become one before accepting your place at GHC to qualify for awards or travel grants.
    • Students may only participate in one ACM SRC per program year (April 1 – March 31). If you have applied to another ACM SRC but haven’t been accepted, you may apply for the ACM SRC at GHC the same year.
    • No more than three research projects will be accepted from a single department and no more than two of those can be in a single category. Departments are determined by the location of the research advisor. Please work with your Department Chair to coordinate submissions.
    • If you are selected, the ACM SRC program may cover expenses up to $500 for all students.
    • If your poster is not accepted to be part of the ACM SRC, then it will automatically be considered for the General Poster Session.
  • Number of presenters: Only one presenter per poster.
  • Topics: Technical only

Submission format: Your submission will consist of two components: a proposal and an abstract.

Rules

Expected Behavior

  • All speakers must register for GHC. If you are unable to speak after confirming your participation, complete the speaker change request form or inform AnitaB.org as soon as possible if you will not have a substitute.
  • All speakers commit to presenting as scheduled by AnitaB.org.
  • Speakers must arrive to their assigned room 30 minutes before their session begins.
  • Speakers must discuss the work for which they were selected to present. Any handouts you provide to attendees must be directly relevant to the session topic and your work.

Unacceptable Behavior

  • Speakers may not use their scheduled talk to promote irrelevant agendas.
  • Speakers may not hand out promotional materials before, during, or after their session.
  • All promotional material must be distributed at their company’s booths.
  • Speakers may not bring company swag into the session room with the intent of distribution. Swag may only be distributed at the speaker’s company booth in the Expo Hall.

Application

  • Step 1: Learn all you can about the Grace Hopper Celebration.
  • Step 2: View all of tracks and decide which one you’re most interested in. GHC is built around different tracks, which are thematic areas with dedicated chairs and committee members.
  • Step 3: Once you’ve chosen your track, it’s time to pick a session format. We offer a variety, so you can choose one that fits your speaking style and topic. You may only submit one proposal per session type.
  • Step 4: Apply to speak. Applications close March 7, 2018 at 5 p.m. PT.
  • Step 5: Wait to hear from them. They expect to announce accepted speakers on May 16, 2018.

Apply to Speak at GHC 2018. Also apply for scholarship to attend GHC 2018.
