Deadline: October 18, 2019

Applications for the Cumberland Lodge Emerging International Leaders Programme 2019-2020 are now open. The Emerging International Leaders programme equips international students with the skills and insight necessary to drive debate, influence policy and build a powerful global network around Freedom of Religion or Belief.

They aim to empower international postgraduate students to become advocates of human rights in their universities and home countries. Every year, 50 high-potential candidates, from universities across the UK, are selected to participate in three residential study retreats at Cumberland Lodge and to join their growing network of FoRB alumni.

Key Themes

The programme focuses on:

  • Why is freedom of religion or belief important?
  • How does freedom of religion or belief intersect with other freedoms?
  • What are the successes/failings of existing national and international policies on freedom of religion or belief?
  • How can existing human rights frameworks be supplemented, supported and implemented?

Residential Retreats

The residential retreats in Windsor Great Park are spread throughout the academic year. Accommodation and meals are provided, and they offer an interactive programme of lectures, workshops, and peer-to-peer learning. Participants have the chance to engage in multi-disciplinary discussions with academics, advocates, religious leaders, policymakers and activitists.

They consider the significance of the Universal Declaration for Human Rights and the broader legislative background and human rights framework for FoRB. They also go on to examine topics such as: the role of religion in the public sphere, religious literacy and inter-faith dialogue, and practical responses to violations of FoRB around the world.

The 2019-2020 retreats will take place on:

  • December 13-15, 2019
  • January 24-26, 2020
  • April 3-5, 2020

Cost

  • Accommodation (in shared, single-sex occupancy rooms) and all food are provided by Cumberland Lodge for all delegates.
  • Travel expenses will be paid as follows:
    • CSC Delegates – in the first instance they ask that Commonwealth scholars use their scholars’ travel grant (provided by CSC) to cover the cost of their travel. If this is not an option, please contact Cumberland Lodge.
    • Chevening Delegates – Cumberland Lodge will cover all reasonable, economy rate travel expenses in line with their travel policy, as long as all relevant tickets and/or receipts are provided.

Eligibility

  • The programme is only open to students currently studying in the UK on either the Chevening or Commonwealth Scholarship Scheme;
  • If you know that you will be unable to attend one or more of the retreats, you are still welcome to apply, however priority will be given to students who are able to attend all three retreats;
  • They accept applications from any postgraduate student, including Masters and PhD students.

Application

  • Download an application form and complete
  • Email your application form only to [email protected], with your full name and Chevening/CSC ID in the subject line, by Friday 18 October 2019

For more information, see the FAQs or visit Cumberland Lodge.
