Deadline: December 14, 2019

Applications for the SIR Foundation Summer Medical Student Internship Program 2020 are now open. The Internship introduces medical students early in their studies to interventional radiology research and medical device development. The internships are for highly motivated medical students who seek to acquire a fundamental understanding of research methods as they relate to vascular and interventional radiology.

The selected students will have an opportunity to intern with an Interventional Radiologist research mentor host or a corporate research and development mentor host during the summer of 2020. There will be one student selected for each funded internship opportunity.

Award

  • Interventional Radiologist Mentor Internship: The SIR Foundation will provide a stipend for living and travel expenses. The IR host/mentor internships are 8 weeks in duration with a minimum of a 40 hour work week. The stipend will be $4,500 US paid to the student by SIR Foundation after the confirmation of the start of the internship. The student is responsible for arranging his/her own transportation and housing at the host location.
  • Corporate Sponsor Mentor Internship: The corporate host internships range from 8-12 weeks in duration with a minimum of a 40 hour work week. Specific details for each corporate host/mentor internship will be provided in the individual program descriptions. The stipend will be provided by the corporate host and explained in the agreement between the corporate host and the student intern. The student is responsible for arranging his/her own transportation and for arranging his/her housing at the host location unless the corporate host chooses to offer housing and those details will be explained by the corporate host. Note: SIR Foundation will waive the registration fee for the SIR member medical student and will provide a travel stipend of up to $1,000.

Eligibility

The student must be recommended by one of the following members of their faculty: Director of the Radiology Residency program, Director of the IR Fellowship, or an interventional radiologist on the faculty. The letter of recommendation must accompany the application at the time of submission and the name of the reference must be provided below. The application will be considered incomplete until the reference letter is received by the SIR Foundation offices.

The student must be a U.S. citizen or have permanent U.S. resident status. Permanent residents must submit documentation of this status.

The medical student must:

  • Commit to completing the full duration of the internship during the summer of 2020.
  • Commit to the curriculum and internship activities as stated in the internship descriptions(attached), for the internship for which the student is selected.
  • Commit to completing the proposed internship project during the internship time period.
  • Communicate with the SIR Foundation biweekly during the internship period to provide a project progress update.
  • Communicate with their site mentor during their internship on a weekly basis at minimum.
  • Commit to attending the SIR Annual Scientific Meeting, which will occur in the spring of 2021, and may be expected to deliver an oral presentation on their 2020 internship project at the Medical Student Brunch. The SIR Foundation will waive the registration fee for the SIR member medical student and will provide a $1,000 travel stipend.

2020 IR internship sites

  • Children’s National Medical Center / George Washington University

    • Please note that preferences will be considered but not guaranteed. Additionally, by only listing 1 site will reduce chances of matching to a summer intern host site.
  • Description of how the applicant became interested in IR scientific research or medical device development (Limit 300 words)
  • List of relevant extra-curricular activities, projects completed that were not required by the medical school curriculum, or previous internships (Limit 300 words)
