How to Deal with a Toxic Workplace

Look, no one expects to be best friends with everyone they work with. In most cases, people don’t even like everyone that they work with. That being said, it is still important that everyone respects each other and that there is a healthy work environment.

Unfortunately, that is not always the case. Many people contribute to a toxic workplace in various ways.

If you think that your workplace is toxic, you may need some tips for dealing with it, and this post is here to help.

Take legal action

As mentioned, various things could lead to a toxic workplace. And some of them are more serious than others. In fact, some things are so serious that you could take legal action against someone.

While this may seem drastic, it is often the only course if you want to end certain types of toxic behavior, such as discrimination or harassment in the workplace. Of course, you may want to try some other courses of action first, but if you feel like the situation isn’t improving, then taking legal action might be the step you need to take.

Determine the problem

It’s not enough to say that you are experiencing a toxic work environment – you also need to figure out why you feel this way. Otherwise, it can be hard to solve the issue.

Some common things that can lead to a toxic work environment include harassment and discrimination, but even those two things can be quite vague. In order to truly address the problem, you will need to determine exactly what type of discrimination it is. For example, you get both direct and indirect discrimination. You can learn more about the difference between the two here.

Gather evidence

As much as your superiors may want to help you, they will likely not be able to address the toxic workplace without having some type of proof of what is happening.

If other employees also feel that the workplace is toxic, it might help if you all bring up the subject together, to show that it’s not just one person who feels this way. If there is one specific person causing this toxic environment, you may want to bring up messages or emails of them saying harmful things.

Of course, this can be hard to do if you have deleted your emails, but there are luckily some ways to get back deleted Gmail emails.

Talk to human resources

Most companies have a human resources department. This department is there to ensure that everyone is treated fairly, that employees feel safe, and that disputes are settled correctly.

Thus, if someone’s actions are making you feel like you are in a toxic work environment, reporting the matter to the human resources team may help. They may be able to take disciplinary action against the other person, or they may be able to mediate a civil discussion so that you can try and resolve the conflict. If this is something you are passionate about, you may even consider pursuing a human resources career yourself.
