Applications are open for the Paul Scherrer Institute (PSI) Scholarship Programme 2020 for PhD Students. The Institute is looking of PhD students to join their Neutron Imaging and Applied Materials Group.
The Paul Scherrer Institute PSI is the largest research institute for natural and engineering sciences within Switzerland. They perform cutting-edge research in the fields of matter and materials, energy and environment and human health. By performing fundamental and applied research, they work on sustainable solutions for major challenges facing society, science and economy. PSI is committed to the training of future generations. Therefore about one quarter of their staff are post-docs, post-graduates or apprentices.
Tasks
- Use Selective Laser Melting (SLM) methods for building metallic components (in collaboration with EMPA, Dübendorf)
- Use diffraction methods for investigating the deformation behavior of austenitic stainless steels processed by SLM
- Use scanning electron microscopy for characterizing the microstructure
- Analyze experimental data and develop interpretation of the deformation mechanisms
- Publish results in scientific journals and present findings at scientific meetings
- The PhD degree will be awarded from EPFL (École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne)
Benefits
- The institution is based on an interdisciplinary, innovative and dynamic collaboration. You will profit from a systematic training on the job, in addition to personal development possibilities and their pronounced vocational training culture. If you wish to optimally combine work and family life or other personal interests, they are able to support you with their modern employment conditions and the on-site infrastructure.
Eligibility
- Applicants should hold a Master degree in materials science, mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or physics
- Have good knowledge of metallurgy
- Knowledge of crystallography, neutron / X-Ray diffraction and / or electron microscopy
- High motivation and ability to work independently in a collaborative and interdisciplinary research team
