    Intel is launching its Student Partner Program! This program aims to advance student education on technology development in three Nigerian universities; the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife; Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port-Harcourt; and the Federal University of Technology, Akure.

    The Intel Student Partner program is an opportunity for active students to enhance their professional development and soft skills, to meet and collaborate with some of the most interesting people in the region, and to have fun introducing Intel products to their fellow students through holding events on campus.

    Eligibility

    • University status: Participants must be enrolled in a full time program in computer science or engineering field  at the following universities:

      • Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife

      • Federal University Of Technology, Akure

      • Rivers State University Of Technology, Port-Harcourt

    • Academic excellence: Participants must have a Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) of minimum 3.5 from their university. Proof of grade point average in the form of academic transcripts is required.

    • Leadership experience: Participants must demonstrate that they have previously organized and led other students in running or implementing a project or event that is of value to the University community. Proof for this should be provided in the form of reference letters from the organization for which they implemented the program.

    Benefits

    Partners will receive the following benefits:

    • Profiling within the Intel Developer Zone (within regional sections dedicated for Africa as a Partner).
    • Opportunity to participate in certain Intel events locally and internationally. For any event that requires travel, Intel will cover all associated, reasonable costs (transport, accommodation and board) on behalf of the Partner based on actually incurred costs only which must be supported by a valid proof of payment.

    Stanford University is offering a free online course on Technology entrepreneurship. This course introduces the fundamentals of technology entrepreneurship, pioneered in Silicon Valley and now spreading across the world.

    Course Logistics

    • Workload: 10-20 hours per week.
    • Technical Requirements: You need a computer that allows you to watch the video lectures, and the ability to upload your assignments which will be reports and powerpoint/video presentations.
    • Statement of Accomplishment: Subject to satisfactory performance and course completion, you will receive a statement of accomplishment signed by the instructor. This statement will not stand in the place of a course taken at Stanford or an accredited institution.

    Miss.Africa Initiative led by DCA Academy, is announcing a Seed Fund in Africa that will offer small grants to support women and girls in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) fields to launch or expand their own initiatives that will increase their digital opportunities in IT related training, jobs and leadership roles. The program is interested in learning about successful activities that are currently supporting women and girls in STEM, and through this effort, identify how to support scalability and their impacts.

    Preference will be given to projects that target under-served populations and locations, take a collaborative approach, have a high potential for growth and present an innovative use of technology.

    Projects eligible for grant funding include, but are not limited to:

    • Computer science workshops and trainings for women and girls.
    • Early incubation of female tech entrepreneurs.
    • Programming and app development training programs.
    • Hackathons and coding boot camps for girls.

    Timeline

    July 1, 2015: Miss.Africa Fund Online Application opens.
    November 15, 2015: Miss.Africa Seed Fund Application Deadline.
    February 2, 2016: Round One of Miss.Africa grants announced.

    Grant

    The 2015 Seed Grant for the amount Five Thousand US dollars ($5,000) will assist the winning initiative to start or expand their capacity.

    Eligibility

    Applicants must meet the following requirements:

    • They should currently resident in an African country (including North and Sub-Saharan Africa).
    • Application must be submitted in English.
    • Applications can come from an individual (at least 18 years of age), or a representative of a non-governmental organization (NGO) or social enterprise based in Africa.
    • Ability to demonstrate previous experience conducting activities supporting women and girls in computer science or STEM fields.
    • Commitment to developing and contributing to a virtual community for supporting women and girls initiatives.
    • Demonstrated leadership potential (references will be required for those applying for leadership funds).
    • Proposed projects MUST have a tangible impact for women and girls in computer science and/or STEM- related fields.

    #Tech4Governance Competition for Ghanaians

    #Tech4Governance is an idea-pitch competition hosted by Making All Voices Count  for Ghanaians where applicants  pitch their new ideas; these ideas should seek to incorporate both online and offline tools to address two or more of the guiding points under the themes listed below. The ideas should aim at addressing Making All Voices Count’s overarching goal; transparency, accountability and better governance.

    Eligibility

    Any entity from Ghana is welcome to apply: companies, government actors, non-profits, for-profits, education establishments, NGOs or individuals.

    Themes

    The two themes for which you can submit your project idea are listed below. Ideas should seek to address two or more of the guiding points under each theme:

    1. Within the theme ‘Improved service delivery’  your projects should:

    •  Use technology to increase accountability and responsiveness of District, Metropolitan and Municipal Assemblies;
    • Use technology to strengthen feedback mechanisms from duty bearers at the local and district level;
    • Strengthen and promote use and adoption of ICT tools in government ministries, departments and agencies;
    • Promote citizen engagement and government accountability through open data and information sharing;
    • Make effective use of technology to ‘make all voices count’ through active engagement of women and/or marginalized groups or communities.

    2. Within the theme ‘Improved electoral processes’ your projects should:

    •  Use technology and innovation for voter registration, voter identification and voter verification processes;
    • Use technology for election monitoring at district and national level;
    • Use technology to allow citizens to vet the electoral process including gaps in voter registration;
    • Use technology to allow media organizations effectively monitor and cover electoral processes at national and district level;
    • Make effective use of technology to ‘make all voices count’ through active engagement of women and/or marginalized groups or communities.

    Award/Benefits

    • Up to 10 finalists will be selected to participate at the pitching competition in Accra, Ghana, where they will pitch their idea to a panel of judges;
    • 1 – 2 winners of the competition will get incubation support for their ideas from Making All Voices Count, with mentoring. Incubation will include preparation for potential innovation grants of up to GBP 40,000 down the line, depending on:
      (i) the development of a proposal strong enough to warrant a grant and
      (ii) demonstration of their capacity to successfully implement;
    • Winners will have access to mentoring support, international networking and related tools and resources through Making All Voices Count’s South to South Lab.

These Grants are available in North America for all traditionally underrepresented groups in technology (including, but not limited to, African Americans, Hispanics, Native Americans, persons with disabilities, women and veterans) and in Europe for women in technology.

    Grants/Awards

    • Free conference registration
    • North America: A $500 prepaid gift card that can be retroactively used toward airfare and accommodation costs, where applicable (will be awarded onsite at the conference)
    • Europe: Up to 1000 EUR towards travel and accommodation costs (will be paid after the conference)

    Google is partnering with Student Veterans of America to offer the Google SVA Scholarship to student veterans who are pursuing university degrees in computer science and related fields in the U.S. The aim of the scholarship is to inspire and help students become future leaders in computing and technology by breaking down the barriers that prevent them from entering these fields. Selected students will receive 10,000 USD for the 2014-2015 school year and will be invited to attend the Google Scholars’ Retreat in the summer of 2014.

    Eligibility

    To be eligible to apply, applicants must:

    • Be currently enrolled as an undergraduate or graduate student at a university for the 2013­-2014 academic year
    • Intend to be enrolled in or accepted as a full-­time student at a university in the United States for the 2014-­2015 academic year

    Applications are now open for the next Bethnal Green Ventures (BGV) summer programme taking place from July-September 2013. Bethnal Green Ventures is an accelerator programme for technology startups working on things that matter. If you are an early-stage technology startup, tackling a social or environmental problem, BGV is looking for you. If selected they will invest £15,000 in return for 6% equity in your company.

    Eligibility

    • Bethnal Green Ventures aims to find and support the most talented startup founders and help them create technology based solutions to the world’s most pressing social and environmental problems.
    • The idea must have the potential to help millions of people somewhere along the line.

    They want to connect the small teams of founders we select to experienced people who have done it before and who are keen to help more people do the same. Their network of founders includes engineers, designers and entrepreneurs as well as people with personal experience and expertise in the problems we’re trying to solve.

    The Deal

    If you are selected for BGV they will

    • invest £15,000 in your startup in exchange for 6% equity;
    • run a three month support programme to help you hone your idea and connect you with the people to make it happen;
    • introduce you to their large network of mentors, investors and customers and provide six months of central London office space.

    Google is pleased to announce that applications are now being accepted for the 2013 Google Policy Fellowship in Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America.

    About the Program

    The Google Policy Fellowship program was inspired by Google’s Summer of Code with a public policy twist. The Google Policy Fellowship program offers students interested in Internet and technology policy the opportunity to spend the summer working on these issues at public interest organizations in Africa, Europe, Latin America and North America. Students will work for 10 weeks over the summer of 2013.

    Fellowship Requirements

    • Fellows will have the opportunity to work at public interest organizations at the forefront of debates on broadband and access policy, content regulation, copyright and trademark reform, consumer privacy, open government, and more.
    • Fellows will be assigned a lead mentor at their host organizations, but will have the opportunity to work with several senior staff members over the course of the summer. Fellows will be expected to make substantive contributions to the work of their organization, including conducting policy research and analysis; drafting reports and analyses; attending government and industry meetings and conferences; and participating in other advocacy activities.

    Eligibility

    Google is looking for

    • students who are passionate about technology, and want to spend the summer diving headfirst into Internet policy.
    • You must be 18 years of age or older by January 1, 2013 to be eligible to participate in Google Policy Fellowship program in 2013.

    Students from all majors and degree programs who possess the following qualities are encouraged to apply:

    • Demonstrated or stated commitment to Internet and technology policy
    • Excellent academic record, professional/extracurricular/volunteer activities, subject matter expertise
