    Intercontinental Youth Forum on PCVE 2017 for Europeans and Africans

    The African Union’s Intercontinental Youth Forum on PCVE 2017 will provide a platform to discuss different means of preventing/countering violent extremism by drawing on the soft power of religion and dialogue and, accordingly making policies at the local, national and regional levels that are relevant to both Africa and Europe. The forum will bring together a group of experts and practitioners on interfaith dialogue, countering violent extremism, and de-radicalization along with a representative group of youth from Africa and Europe.

    The forum will focus on the following objectives:

    • To develop strategic directions for the Interfaith Dialogue on Violent Extremism (IDOVE) project based on principles and methods of interfaith dialogue on countering violent extremism and de-radicalization.
    • To develop suitable concepts and applications for the IDOVE website that will be launched at the Forum.
    • To develop concepts and mechanisms to support small scale youth-run projects to be implemented in Africa and Europe within the project objectives.
    • To design plans for a monitoring and evaluation (M&E) system to monitor the implementation of small scale projects, following up on them through annual meetings.

    Cost

    • The organizers will cover all travel and accommodation costs associated with the forum.

    Eligibility

    • Aged between 20-35;
    • Citizen or resident of a European or an African country;
    • Fluency in either English or French, in addition to fluency in another language;
    • Proven interest in interfaith, de-radicalization and/or preventing/countering violent extremism, as evident from having:
      • Developed projects related to those topics,
      • Participated in projects related to those topics,
      • Conducted formal research on those topics,
      • Participated in conferences, workshops and forums on those topics.

    Applications are now invited for the Turkey-Europe Future Forum 2017 taking place from 2 to 9 July on the topic ‘Reflecting Change’ in Izmir and Istanbul. The Future Forum brings together 30 outstanding young leaders from Turkey and Europe to benefit from an intensive exchange of ideas, substantial training measures and access to an important network.

    The Turkey Europe Future Forum is a project of the Mercator Program Center for International Affairs (MPC) in cooperation with TUSIAD and “Turkey: Culture of Change Initiative” (TCCI).

    Cost and Benefits

    The costs of participating in the programme including travel, accommodation and subsistence expenses will be covered.

    All project related expenses will be covered for participants of the programme. These include travel expenses from Europe and Turkey to the venue of the Forum (economy/coach class)*, public transportation to and from the airport to the hotel, accommodation**, meals during the conference, and other project related expenses.

    The Forum does not cover any travel or additional costs incurred through participants’ personal expenses.

    Eligibility

    • 28 to 38 years of age
    • At least two years’ professional experience in the fields of politics, economics, administration, culture, media, science or civil society
    • Outstanding academic and professional qualifications

    Teachers are the foundation of excellence in computer science. The world needs well prepared educators to facilitate Computer Science not only because of the growing number of computing related jobs, but also because it develops critical thinking skills needed to solve complex problems, creativity that fosters new ideas, and skills to drive innovation in tech and other fields.

    Funding

    • Institutions may receive support between €15,000 to $35,000; depending on the region they operate from.

    Google #Hash Code Challenge 2017 for Students and Industry Professionals

    Hash Code is a team-based programming competition organized by Google for students and industry professionals across Europe, the Middle East and Africa. You pick your team and programming language, Google picks a real-life engineering problem for you to solve. Are you up for the challenge?

    The competition takes place over two rounds:
    • Online Qualification Round: Your team can participate from one of the competition hubs or from wherever else you’d like;
    • Final Round: Top scoring teams from the Online Qualification Round will be invited to Google Paris to compete in the Final Round of the competition.

    Prizes

    For the Final Round, Google will award cool prizes to the three teams with the highest scores. Every participant will also get a certificate of qualification to the Final Round and a gift bag.

    Cost

    • Participants will be responsible for arranging their own travel and accommodation. Participants will be able to apply for a travel grant from Google (between 100 and 500 EUR) in order to help offset these costs. If selected, participants will receive the grant after the Final Round takes place.

    • Open to university students and industry professionals in Europe, the Middle East and Africa;
    • You must be over the legal age of your country of residence and at least over 18 years of age at the date of the Online Qualification Round;
    • Your team can consist of two, three or four members and team composition cannot be changed after the Online Qualification Round has begun;

    Job Responsibilities

    Finesse consists of a 24-month training programme which encompasses two international 12-month placements in our hotels. During your placements, you will gain all-round Finance experience whilst working in all the main Finance functions. You will also gain exposure in the other key functional areas of Operations, Business Development and Human Resources. You will participate in off-the-job training and have business driven projects to complete. Following successful completion of this 2 year programme you will then be assigned into a full-time Finance role in year 3.

    During Finesse your progress is constantly assessed, so you always know how you are developing. As the programme is so flexible, it will take into account all training that you have had to date and build on it, rather than making you repeat things unnecessarily.

    Applications are now accepted for the 2017 G(irls)20 Summit taking place in Germany in June 2017. G(irls)20 places girls and women at the heart of the economic decision making process by advancing the idea that increasing female labour force participation will generate growth, stabilize communities and countries, and lead to social innovation. Designed G20 style, the G(irls)20 Summit brings together one delegate from each G20 country, plus a representative from the European and African Unions, Afghanistan, Pakistan and the MENA region.

    During the Summit, delegates attend skills building workshops (entrepreneurship, financial preparedness, communications, digital literacy, leadership, etc.) participate in panel discussion with local and global experts, and then produce a communique with tangible, scalable solutions towards increase FLFP. The communiqué is presented to G20 Leaders for their consideration.

    Benefits

    The following will be provided to all G(irls)20 Summit Delegates:
    • Summit learning materials and supplies;
    • Return economy air travel arrangements, from the closest international airport to the delegate’s home to Germany;

    Search for Common Ground (SFCG) are accepting applications for the African Program Spring Internship. SFCG seeks to help conflicting parties understand their differences and act on their commonalities. With a total of approximately 400 staff worldwide, SFCG implements projects from 55 offices in 35 countries, including in Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and the United States.

    The Africa Program is active in Angola, Burundi, Central African Republic, Chad, Côte d’Ivoire, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Guinea, Liberia, Madagascar, Niger, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Sudan, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda and Zimbabwe. The intern will support the Africa Team in providing programmatic, logistical, and financial support to SFCG’s projects in the region. The internship begins in January and typically lasts until May and is based in SFCG’s Washington DC headquarters.

    Duties of Interns

    • Contributing to the production of donor reports and grant proposals;
    • Attending policy meetings, representing the Africa Program;
    • Backstopping the Washington DC-based Africa Team and country offices overseas; and
    • Assisting with website, program literature and database system maintenance.

    Eligibility

    • Undergraduates (juniors and seniors), graduate students, and recent graduates are welcome to apply;
    • They should possess good writing, editing and communication skills;
    • A self-starting, detail-oriented and flexible approach to tasks (required);

    The Young Leaders Visitors Programme (YLVP) is an intercultural leadership programme for young leaders from the Middle East, North Africa and Sweden. The programme offers personal and professional development to leaders who work for positive social change in the fields of democracy, human rights, sustainability and equality. YLVP provides the tools necessary to accomplish greater social impact.

    YLVP builds and strengthens individual leadership through group-centric methods such as collaboration, feedback and reflection. Participants will learn in group from merited facilitators and from each other, through workshops, practical exercises and hands-on performance.

    Eligibility

    Eligible participants should:

    • be an NGO leader, legal worker, journalist, social worker, cultural worker, social entrepreneur, civil servant, youth politician or in another type of leadership role
    • work actively for democracy, sustainability, diversity and/or human rights
    • be between 22 and 32 years old (born 1984 – 1995)
    • have a good working knowledge of both written and spoken English
    • be a citizen of Algeria, Egypt, Iraq, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Palestine*, Sweden, Syria, Tunisia or Yemen.

    *Palestinian ID holders, including Jerusalem ID.

    Apply by filling out the Application Form and by going to the  application portal. Only applicants who have submitted a complete application will be considered for the programme. A complete application consists of:

    • a completed application form in English, including your contact details and the contact details of two reference persons;
    • an updated CV in English;
    • a letter of recommendation* (no more than 500 words) from a person who knows your work in the areas of democracy or human rights. The letter should motivate your participation in the programme with reference to the YLVP criteria; the letter should preferably be in English but could also be submitted in French or Arabic. We prefer that you use our template for the letter of recommendation, but it’s not compulsory. Templates are available in English, French and Arabic;
    • a photo (not compulsory).

    *Organisers will need the contact details of the person writing the letter of recommendation (name, job title, telephone number and email address).     International Film Festival Rotterdam is looking for participants for the 19th IFFR Trainee Project for Young Film Critics, taking place during its 46th edition (January 25 – February 5, 2017). Talented young film critic are invited to join in this project. As a Trainee you are part of the editorial staff of the festival paper, will have 2-3 expert meetings with experienced film critics, will cover the festival for your own affiliation, write a final festival report for the FIPRESCI website and of course enjoy the full pleasure of being at International Film Festival Rotterdam.

    Ashoka invites applications for ChangemakerXchange 2016 ! Originally created in Istanbul by Ashoka and supported by the Robert Bosch Stiftung, the ChangemakerXchange is a global collaboration platform for young social entrepreneurs. It gathers some of the world’s most exciting changemakers at summits around the world for the exchange and co-creation of ideas. The ChangemakerXchange now brings together young social entrepreneurs from 55 different countries in Europe, Turkey, the South Caucasus, the Middle East, North Africa and Asia

    Selection criteria

    Applicants for ChangemakerXchange:

    • Must be aged between 18 and 30. Please note a limited number of three places is available for 29- and 30-year-old applicants.
    • Should lead, co-lead, have founded or co-founded their own social venture which is up and running and addresses a relevant social problem. We are unable to accept applicants with an idea only or who are volunteering for an organisation.
    • Must have a good level of English that enables them to understand, present, and collaborate throughout the summit.
    • Should have the skills and know-how to be part of a special community of collaborative young social entrepreneurs and be willing to play an active role within this community.
    • Must come from Europe, Turkey, the South Caucasus, the Middle East or North Africa (the Maghreb and Egypt).

    Covered costs

    ChangemakerXchange covers 100% of travel costs and the majority of the conference costs for all four nights and five days (including hotel accommodation, inner city travel, food, entrance fees, etc.). However, participants will be charged a modest fee of €100 to cover part of the costs.     Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme 2017

    Each year, PhD supervisors from academic institutions in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) are invited to submit their proposals for collaborative research projects with Microsoft Research Cambridge. Applications are then peer reviewed and approximately 20 projects are selected for funding. PhD students are appointed to the selected projects and begin their research in the following academic year under the supervision of their academic supervisor, with co-supervision from a researcher at Microsoft Research Cambridge.

    The Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship Programme in EMEA (Europe, Middle East, Africa) was launched in 2004 and has so far supported more than 200 PhD students from more than 18 countries and 51 institutions. During the course of their PhD, Scholars are invited to Microsoft Research in Cambridge for a PhD Summer School that includes a series of talks of academic interest and posters sessions, which provides the Scholars the opportunity to present their work to Microsoft researchers and a number of Cambridge academics.

    Funding

    • Each Microsoft scholarship consists of an annual bursary up to a maximum of three years. The monetary value of the award varies by country to reflect local differences in costs and overheads;
    • Payment is made directly to the institution. The amount of the scholarship is the maximum amount Microsoft Research pays to the institution;
    • In addition, every Scholar receives a fixed hardware allowance and conference allowance. See more on funding.

    Eligibility

    • Applications must not be made by students but by PhD supervisors, who must have been in dialogue with the prospective Microsoft supervisor and jointly collaborated on the proposal prior to the submission deadline;
    • If their project is selected, the supervisor has until March 31, 2018 to find the best possible student for the project; otherwise, the PhD Agreement will be terminated automatically;
    • Only applications from institutions in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa will be considered.

    Application Process

    • Access the online application form to submit your research proposals;
    • Applications must be submitted by academic institutions, such as from a PhD supervisor or departmental secretary. Applications from students directly will not be accepted;
    • Applications are on a competitive basis and a high level of demand for scholarships is anticipated (the average selection rate is approximately 20 percent).

    For an application to be considered, the following key requirements apply:

    • The institute agrees to the terms and conditions in the MRL Term Sheet and EPSRC Term Sheet where appropriate;
    • The applicant must be in dialogue with the prospective Microsoft supervisor prior to the submission deadline and jointly drafting the proposal;

    ASEF is pleased to invite practising journalists from all ASEM countries to apply for the ASEF Journalists’ Workshop on “Asia-Europe Media Connectivity: Collaborating on Digital Journalism” to be held, October 4-7, 2016, in Madrid, Spain. The Workshop offers an opportunity for 15 journalists (from Asia and Europe), to come together to share their professional media experiences and perspectives on handling digital connectivity from national and regional levels.

    The theme will focus on media connectivity between Asia and Europe and the media’s responsibility in connecting communities and sharing information. The discussions will explore current trends in digital media and the role of journalism in reflecting and facilitating connectivity among diverse communities.
